I don't see a guy taking shifts off like you see with guys like JVR. He's trying. I'm on board with this. Maybe Giroux's future with this team is 3rd line center, face off specialist and on the PP. And, he can still wear the "C" I don't think Dave Poulin was a top line guy, but he was a great "C"

My hope for this gesture is that it becomes more than just a gesture. I hope these guys taking these stands can affect real change in our community. We may disagree- but I value you all as humans.

eleven24
Decades from now people are going to look back on 2020 and what humanity endured. I hope they do so while pointing to this moment in time as when the world became a better place.

In the NBA when a player hits 1100 games their play declines...I wonder if this is happening with Giroux? He might not be a top line guy anymore, that could be true. I don't think he should be absolved from criticism, I do think those who are questioning his effort and desire are high and would like for marijuana to be legal in my state too. I think there are 2 things contributing to much of this criticism; he makes a big salary that he signed when he was top 10/15 in the league. His compensation was commensurate with his performance. Also, there was that time he was day drinking and grabbed the cop's ass. That caused about 1/2 the fan base to turn on him because, he might be a "light running homosexual". Those are 2 things that have zero to do with what actually happens on the ice but shade everyone's opinion of him. I would like to posit this. It could very well be we are witness to his physical decline, he has not been effective nor dominant as he was as a younger man. The reason the team bounces back is because of leadership. Of which he plays a large role. There would have been zero reason to watch this team over the last 8 years were he not on it. They were objectively a bad team for much of the teens. Wasting his prime years on rebuilds. I am sure Giroux is in a career decline, which is expected as you get older. I do think if he did the right kind of offseason training he could certainly strengthen his legs and work on his stamina and it would improve his game . The coaching staff can also help out by cutting down his ice time a little bit and prolong his career.

eleven24
Ok, I know the reason for the postponing of the games is for a good cause... but hockey speaking, I think this is great for the Flyers. It's seemed to me for quite awhile now that they look tired at times. A rest and regroup should serve them well. Even if after the games resume the schedule will be even tighter. I have wondered about the schedule, is there a hard "out" with the arenas? seems to me like there isn't anything else going on, what's the rush? Also, noticed coach Vigneault taking some heat because he doesn't know or care to comment about what's going on outside of the bubble. I'm glad he's watching film and trying to work on match-ups rather than live tweeting the RNC. I would like to think he'd have the opportunity to tilt a martini occasionally, maybe he's doing that anyway and has a frightening room service bill. I see lots of other problems with our team game, but much of it can be addressed through simplification and a stronger commitment to better gap control and better puck support.

The only thing I can guess and I'm only guessing here is they don't want to competing with basketball playoffs, baseball and college football as well as NFL in the coming weeks while they are competing for a Covid Cup. It's all I got so not why there would be a rush besides that especially with the back to back games they had scheduled. Man could you imagine having back to back games and then the first one goes into 3 or 4 OTs before claiming a winner and then trying to play again in 18 hours or something? Yes and quicker decisions making once you have the puck. And the Isles do this do well they obtain the puck and don't skate with it long they move it up ice with passes not skating. This is something that has plagued the Flyers for years inaccurate passes and then not being able to clean receive it and go or pass it further. I don't know how one team can be so quick and crisp and the other slow and sloppy. I hope they can work it out.

I think there have been issues in the past with some of the fundamentals like passing - I'm always going on about pro hockey players not being able to make a 3 foot pass - but most of the time it is a symptom of something else (poor puck support, poor gaps, poor angles, poor positioning etc), not the cause. I know I've been saying this kind of thing a lot lately. The Isles are plenty fast and plenty aggressive. When it works and you don't have good support to make quick plays and exits, it's very effective. But it's also prone to odd-man rushes and we've seen that. We've had plenty of 2 on 1s and plenty of breakaways. I'd like to see more of what transpired on Coot's goal to make it 3-0. The pass by Sanheim was all world, but it was only possible because of great positioning and a great touch play by Giroux (at the 1:24 mark):

I agree with a lot you said, but in the Flyers case a lot of what I am seeing is when the lane is there to make said pass they don't jump on the chance. They keep it till the Isles converge on them and the window to make the pass has shunk immensely or is not even there and then they'll try and force it and send a sloppy hard to handle pass to the guy with a lot of times it being in their skates. It would be nice to seem make a quick decision and commit to the is no time out there for hesitation.
