More Proof Hayes isn't Worth the Contract

"Flyers center Kevin Hayes is the first player on the team to score four or more shorthanded goals in a season since Matt Read notched four during the 2013-14 season."

He's in a class with  Matt Read. He's doomed☠️

The sarcasm detector is working..lol. Pleasantly surprised by Hayes. He's a glue guy that makes the team much tougher to play against. Seems like the kinda guy who would step it up in the playoffs. Dont know why the Jets benched him in the post season last year, but their loss . Poor use of a player and pro scouting on the Jets part. Play Little before Hayes...not in my section of the world!

Im really liking this guy. Seems like a heart and soul player. Not saying he is worth the contract, yet, but he sure could be

When I see him on breakaways, i feel confident he will score. I dont feel that same confidence with any other flyer

when you put it like that...it kills my joy.

Let's hope he pots another one soon so he can move past my favorite "that guy is, you know, ah...pretty good, he...uh can skate and his uh his shot is accurate" Flyers player  from the last 10 years.

I have to admit, and eat some crow here, that he's not as slow as I thought. He showed that on that last shortie. I do still wonder about his conditioning based on his history and what I saw of him with the Jets at the end of the season, but I will judge him on his play as a Flyer at this point. There's probably no way he can ever be "worth that contract," but he does a lot well and seems like a good "guy in the room."

In fairness to me, I did put it in quotes. Plus, you were the numb-skull that mentioned Matt Read!

I refer you to the quotes in my original post

I fully accept numb-skull

The same folks whining about Hayes are the same folks that said Coots was never anything more than a 3rd line defensive specialist b/c of his skating.

Well, maybe some. I defended Couturier ad nauseum.

As for Hayes...I still hate that contract. I'll bet a lot more will as the years go on. Loving a player months into a SEVEN YEAR deal may not age as well as you'd like.

Hope I'm proven wrong.  Sure as heck wasn't on Bryz. Heard the same cheering this far into his contract.

So everyone should remain silent until we have a few seasons to decide if he is playing good enough for some credit?

I dont see anything wrong with acknowledging the guy for what he has done thus far. It doesn't mean he's the next Bobby Clarke

I don't have a problem with the way Hayes is playing at all. But he's months into a 7 year deal. On pace for his usual 40-something points. At $7 million a year. If that's money well spent I don't know what to say. There's worse contracts out there, there's worse on the team... but that doesn't make his good. Again, i'm talking about his contract, not his play.

right now @flyercanuck I think this is good value (not his 9 million a year this year or whatever), but I think he's been exactly what the team needed in regard to a plays in all situations center.

He seems to be digging it here, likes his teammates- keeps things loose, he's reminding me of Scott Hartnell type around the team but with better skating an more hockey versatility on the ice. The only thing he doesn't do is fight and I don't know where that fits in today's game.

It's funny how we look to the past this guy was great 2 years ago or the future this dude won't be worth it in 4 years

I'm trying to stay in the moment. Right now the team is playing well, and they're pretty fun to watch not just the results but they compete all over the ice and play aggressively .

Again, I agree that I like his play. He seems like a good team guy at the present. I hope he keeps the enthusiasm throughout the contract. It's easy to be motivated short term when someone, in his words, overpays you to play there. I just don't see many of us loving this contract in a few years. I'm not a fan of it now...but if his game heads south in 3 years... There's also the issue of him getting comfortable on his team, like he did with his previous two, to the point of getting benched and traded. Except he'd be a lot harder to trade this time.
