Link:BBC story: [Keefe Interview] I still have not found a good game story on either Belfast game which at least says who scored for the Bisons. I have not seen in photos nor mentioned in a story last season's back-up goaltender Justin Paulic, nor any new recruit in net. The Bisons (and all teams for that matter) really need to upload roster pages for 2017-18.

Hollywood
Sept 14: Bison Roster Uploaded Links:¶ [Roster Page]¶ [Geordie Keane @Elite Prospects] The Bison website has finally uploaded a 2017-18 roster page. I expect/hope the rest of the dominoes to fall this week. The team has one new previously unannounced recruit, Geordie Keane from the Winnipeg Blues of the MJHL. His stats and the roster page are linked. His uncle is 3-time Stanley Cup champion Mike Keane and I believe former Bison assistant coach Billy Keane is his father. Geordie was the Blues' captain last year. My concern is the lack of blue-line recruits. The Herd has 3 goaltenders, 7 defencemen, and 18 forwards. Just like last year. Here's the breakdown: Goaltenders Returning 1 Justin Paulic 34 Dasan Sydora 35 Byron Spriggs This is the 3rd season for the exact same group of three. Spriggs won the starting job from Paulic and Sydora is a #3. In the past, Coach Sirant has shown that the back-up one year will be given a shot at being the #1 the next. Defence Returning 2 Adam Henry 3 Sean Christensen 4 Channing Bresciani 9 Rene Hunter 16 Blake Heinrich Recruits 11 Victor Sharonov 25 Lucas Skrumeda Departed 5 Lee Christensen 20 Garrett Johnston Sharonov was on the roster for the 2nd semester but never dressed. The big Russian is an enigma. He somehow wound up in Florida. Maybe if we read Hillary Cinton's new book we will find out how he cost her the election. Johnston is gone after just one year, which is too bad. Christensen played 5 years and became a solid defender. On paper, the quality should be at least as good, with the benefit of added seasoning for the 5 returnees. Last year, several forwards played stretches on defence and that may be necessary again. Forwards Returning 8 Liam Bilton 10 Brett Dudar 12 Nick Zajac 13 Remi Laurencelle 14 Kamerin Nault 15 Shawn Bowles 17 Warren Callis 21 Brett Brooks 22 Brad Bowles 23 Joel Schreyer 24 Justin Augert 26 Quintin Lisoway 28 Brett Stovin 29 Jonah Wasylak Recruits 18 Michael St. Croix 19 Calvin Spencer 20 Geordie Keane 27 Zach Franko Departed 16 Jesse Paradis 19 Hudson Friesen 25 Shaq Merasty 27 Jordan Depape Despite losing their 1st and 4th leading scorers, the recruits are likely a slight upgrade on paper. Depape and Merasty were CW superstars, but St. Croix and Franko are great replacements. Paradis and Friesen seldom played so anything from Spencer and Keane would be a bonus. The question I have is: Which of these players can play the point? It is hard to scratch 6 forwards every game. There are a load of returning 2nd year Junior A players, and often those players improve greatly as they become veterans.

The 2nd and 3rd Regina goals were on the powerplay. Those goes came within a period where the Bisons were assessed four interference goals, which was quite bizarre. On the night, the shots were 29-27 in favour of the Bisons. I saw Sydora play a full game for the first time. He's a #3 goalie. So far, I have not seen that last year's #2 (Justin Paulic) has made an appearance. The Kittens are not a strong team, but they are better this year. They are now 2-2-0 in pre-season. They won't go .500 in the regular season, and will likely finish last, but they are on the right track. THUNDERBIRDS (3-1-0, 2016-17: 12-13-3)MANITOBA BISONS (4-4-1, 2016-17: 14-12-2) Oct 7 7:00 pm at The Wayne Fleming ArenaOct 8 1:00 pm at The Wayne Fleming Arena Links:Manitoba: [Captains Announced] ∞ [Series Preview] ∞ [Twitter] ∞ [Facebook]UBC: [Season Preview] ∞ [Twitter] ∞ [Facebook]USports: [Men's Hockey] ∞ [Schedule] ∞ [Standings]CW: [Season Preview] ∞ [Schedule]CanadaWest.tv: [CanadaWest.tv] ∞ [Free Game]Stats: [Hockey Tech Stats] ∞ [Hockey Tech Schedule] ∞ [LeagueStat Schedule] ∞ [LeagueStat Daily] ∞ [LeagueStat Stats] This series will be in the unusual Saturday-Sunday format. The rest of the CW goes on the usual Friday-Saturday basis. The stats links have nothing downloaded for the 2017-18 season. No schedules, rosters, etc. I emailed the CW to see what's up. The CW coaches' poll was released this week. The results are: T1. Alberta & Saskatchewan / 46 (4) 3. Calgary / 37 4. UBC / 24 5. *Manitoba / 23 6. Mount Royal / 23 7. Lethbridge / 18 8. Regina / 7 NOTES: First-place vote worth 7 pts., second-place worth 6 pts. etc. / *Awarded higher position based on greater number of higher placed votes. Without league-wide roster updates I have been unable to look over all of the teams. I do not see UBC as improved, and they were 6th last year. In general, all teams other than MRU had a recruiting class sufficient to at least replace their graduating players. The Bisons announced that Brett Stovin will be the captain, and the alternates will be defencemen Adam Henry and Channing Bresciani and forwards Michael St. Croix and Nick Zajac. Last year these teams had close games, two wins each and the most one-sided was a 4-2 win by the Bisons. So I expect to see some good hockey this weekend. Both games will be available at CanadaWest.tv. There is a charge, so check the links. They have one free game each weekend. This weekend it is men's soccer between Thompson Rivers and Fraser Valley. Don't complain. It's free. The Banjo Cats beat the Banjo Mutts and the Bisons in pre-season, going 2-2-0 against CW teams. They were then blitzed twice in the States by 8-0 margins. Have they already crashed to Earth? Meanwhile, the Mutts were only 1-3-0 in pre-season. On paper, they should be even stronger than the 1st place team and conference and national runners-up they were a year ago. But that's what the Bluegars did this year. The Monkeys had a good pre-season, ending with a loss in Minnesota on a weekend split. MRU did lose more than they gained in the graduation/recruitment sweepstakes, so everybody will be looking to see if they will slide this year. This will be a stern test for them. The Bedrock Dinos have a large and WHL-laden recruiting class. They did lose some veteran leadership which could hurt them in the long run. We'll see. Hollywood
Oct 6: Favourites Dominate Opening Night With the Bisons playing Saturday-Sunday, all we have on opening night is the out-of-town scoreboard. However, there was an afternoon story about 150 WHL grads playing in the CW. More on that later.OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARDMOUNT ROYAL COUGARS 0ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 7 Links:Boxscores: [CW] : [Coach's View] : [US]Stories: [UofA] : [rp @MRU] : [rp @CW] The opening night of the CW indicates that the conference may be subdividing into haves and have nots this year. The Evil Monkeys have added a load of players the last two years and are poised to make a run for the title. On the other hand, MRU may have peaked a year ago. This was a whuppin. Seven different Monkeys had one goal each, and Brendan Burke made 24 saves for the shutout. Wyatt Hoflin started for the Bluegars stopped 23 of 27 through two periods, and Colin Cooper stopped 10 of 13 in the third. The rematch goes Saturday at MRU. Then last weekend they lost a pair of 8-0 games in the States and here they got skunked by their northern hillbilly brethren. The Mutts had 8 different goalscorers. Jordon Cooke stopped 20 of 22 for the win. Michael Herringer stopped 37 of 45 in his debut loss. He looked good in pre-season but the Kittens' blue line can have a negative effect on a guy. Saturday's rematch goes in Saskatown. Hollywood
Oct 6: Bisons Lose Opener It is the first Saturday night of the season and the CW's crappy website is still not working. This could have been tolerated in past seasons when they had LeagueStat current and operational. That is no longer the case. They spent all their money on a new logo, which is nice but non-essential. The archives (to the extent they even have archives) will remain there. But now we are stuck with the stats links from the main page, where they have no rosters, no game day scoreboard, and boxscores list only the starting lineup. Last year they brought in "Hockey Tech" for links from the website. No more. Very disappointing. Now the CW site is the same as the US site. (Did the bozos at the CIS realize their new abbreviation would be "US" when the switched to U-Sports?) U.B.C. THUNDERBIRDS 6MANITOBA BISONS 4 Links:Boxscores: [CW] : [Coach's View] : [US] : [UofM*]Stories: [UofM] : [rp @CW] : [UBC] The Bison opener was a strange one. The Bisons opened strong and at one point held a 13-2 lead in shots, bit just a 1-0 lead on the scoreboard, by defenceman Sean Christensen. Then Justin Augert was assessed a borderline highsticking penalty. The T-irds' powerplay was nothing special but then notched a goal out of nowhere, by Matt Ravel. The 2nd period was back-and-forth, and UBC emerged with a 3-2 lead. Byron Spriggs appeared to choose to play the puck rather than pounce for a faceoff on the go-ahead goal, Quinton Lisoway then tied the game, and then a shorthanded goal on a fumbled pass put the T-irds ahead to stay. The 3rd period was one Spriggs would love to forget. He gave up 3 goals on 11 shots, and 6 goals on 27 shots on the night. Matt Hewitt stopped 32 of 36 shots for the win. Here's how they lined up: MANITOBA Goal 35 Spriggs (34 Sydora) Defence 2 Henry - 25 Skrumeda 4 Bresciani - 16 Heinrichs 3 Christensen Note: Only 5 defencemen were dressed and they rotated almost evenly. Hollywood
Oct 8: Bisons Bounce Back, Beat BirdsU.B.C. THUNDERBIRDS 2MANITOBA BISONS 3 Links:Boxscores: [CW] : [Coach's View] : [US] : [UofM]Late Saturday : [UofM Boxscore]Stories: [UofM] : [rp @CW] : [UBC] The Bisons once again got off to a great start by dominating the shot clock. However, they were not able to cash in and in fact rallied from down 0-2 to win this one. The final shots on goal were 29-16 in favour of the Bisons, including 14-5 in the 3rd. Those numbers reflected the flow of the game. Captain Brett Stovin scored the winner though suffering a broken nose. Both he and Quintin Lisoway left the ice for repairs with a towel around their face, though neither incident drew a penalty. There were a lot of controversial calls in the game. But by the 3rd period the players had calmed down a lot. Neither side switched their roster from Saturday. UBC switched goaltenders. UBC really only used 10 of the 12 forwards on any sort of a regular basis. Here's how they lined up: MANITOBA Goal 35 Spriggs (34 Sydora) Defence 3 Christensen - 4 Bresciani 16 Heinrichs - 2 Henry 25 Skrumeda Note: As on Saturday, only 5 defencemen were dressed and they rotated almost evenly. That number needs to get better for the Bisons to host a playoff series. Also, they need to finish above .500 at home. As for UBC, the pace and physicality took their toll. Their whole lineup walked gingerly onto the ice for the 3rd period on Sunday. Do they have what it takes to grind their way through tough series like this one all year? It is very early but it appears that the die may have been cast for the balance of the season. Sask and Alberta had dominating sweeps. Manitoba, Calgary, UBC, and Lethbridge all had splits. And teams named "Cougars" have had it rough. OUT EASTONTARIOExhibition GamesOct 07 Windsor 2 Harvard 7 (NCAA) : [UW S&R]Oct 08 Windsor 1 Dartmouth 2 (NCAA) : [CHN]NEXT UP Oct 13-14 Calgary at U.B.C.
