Man, why do I ever go to Bleacher Report? "Flyers are in need of mobile defensemen, so they pick a big Russian center." 6'0 isn't what I'd consider big, and Mobile d-men aren't something the Flyers lack, either as prospects or on the big club.

As the trade was announced, I came to the conclusion that Hexy and the scouts had a reasonable expectation that their target would last through picks 18-21. If was indeed the case, it was wonderfully smart. Maybe they target a goalie they really like at #36? I'm a little worried that Dubrincat (one of the big offense forces not picked on Friday) becomes a power play specialist....he's quick but not fast, that's a bit alarming with a 5'7 prospect. Johnny Gaudreau is way thinner, but he's blazing fast. I don't see any way they draft another center, but I really like the game Pu plays, from the Memorial Cup Champs London Knights. London was so deep it prevented Pu from getting the kind of ice time he needed to grow his offensive game, next year he will be utilized much more.

I know reports that Toronto was looking at the goalie from Sweden, Filip Gustavsson, but if they don't take him at #31 maybe Hexie will grab him at #36 since we could always use another young goalie in the system. Besides Hexie still has 2 more second round picks (there's something that Flyers fans haven't heard in a long time, the Flyers having second round picks). You got to love the Toronto media, the Toronto Sun has a picture of Auston Matthews on the front page with a statement "At long last, the savior is here!". He better hope he has a good career and can deal with the media in Toronto otherwise he's going have to a hell of time in Toronto.

At first I was a little iffy about this guy, not because of his talent or character but because we really need a LW that can score and develop fast. Was hoping for Jones or Bellows.

So does this open up the possibility of making a play for Lucic at free agency? I know the cap space will be tight with having to sign a few guys and other's increases hitting this season.

Not saying hes a bad pick, but we have Coots, G, Laughton and Cousins and really no top left wing prospects. I really thought we would pick Jones ,Gauthier or Bellows. It seems that we passed on more skilled players to draft another Coots. We need finishers not another guy that is a pass first player ,we already have G and Voracek that fit that mold. Everyone says Gauthier is one dimensional and scores lots of goals ,but not many assists, Tim Kerr never got many assists either, Gauthier is Kerr with skating ability.... I hope theres some good skilled wingers in the second round.

Unless the Flyers don't intend to re-sign Schenn or can offload another contract, the deal that Gudas got pretty much kills any chance of signing Lucic.

Yeah that's kinda what i was figuring, and Schenn is a must resign imo. He is finally developing and with more years under Hak he could be another 30g/year player

Did they really say that? Ghost/Provorov/Sanheim/Morin/Myers/Hagg/Friedman are all mobile. They couldn't have said anything dumber regarding the draft.

Flyers Trade Down, Select Russian Involved in Doping Scandal

I think there is some credence to his stock dropping because of the U-18 Russian drug scandal.  I still would have preferred a winger but since I don't have my own scouting department I need to give Hexy the benefit of the doubt.

Usually the best forwards on teams are centres. As they advance further up the ladder of success many of them move over to the wing.

What are these "2nd round picks" that you speak of?

LOL

new concept, i know, apparently teams can pick players with picks numbered 31-60 , who knew I had to look it up myself too.

And apparently you're allowed to do it more than once each draft! Go figure.

I kinda sorta understand it from Bleacher....but how in the holy hell did Sportsnet say that Flyers needs are Defensemen right before the drafting of the Russian center? That is mind boggling to me. I heard some of the announcers talk about our prized stable of d-men...but that graphic blew me away....how utterly stupid is that?

Bro, every TO fan I know, which is a staggering number unfortunately has uttered the words "We got the Cup" multiple times to me in the last week....it is so predictable.

I can only assume their is something off the ice that the Flyers don't like about Jones. The speed and the hands  AND the grit is there, along with size and positional needs. The very worst he can be is a rich man's Ron Sutter....which ain't a bad basement to be in....best case, we passed on a 35-40 goal winger at a spot where we needed depth. They must really, really like the upside on this Russian kid....and welcome, nice to have you here.

Ya, when they traded down I figured Hextall had a few players in that tier and he could still grab one and get another slightly lesser talent early in the 2nd. Nothing wrong with having more shots at the board.

My guess is Hextall and company are in the group that thought Rubstov was close to top ten talent who fell due to cheating Russia. I would have been happy getting Jones AND the 2nd...but Philly has a pretty good track record picking later in the 1st so I trust what they did here.

Oh I know, up here in Sudbury the majority of Leaf fans have gone on stupid alert, but it's always a good time to have fun with them by saying that he'll only be playing in TO until he is 26 then he'll sign with Arizona as a free agent. It will be interesting to see where Stamkos goes. Hexie did take a goalie which ends up being the number one rated goalie in the draft.

I don't think there needed to be anything wrong with Jones to pick Rubstov.

I haven't seen one write up about German that wasn't full of cocksplat about his intelligence, two way ability and puck skills... I truly think this was a BPA situation where perhaps other teams didn't do the vetting on him or thought he would be around in the second because he was on the the cheating russian team.  Everything i've read has said he is top ten player. Why wouldn't you pick that guy ? As we're seeing; we're not exactly "golden" down the middle.  We got a great little guy, a sluggish very good big guy, a question mark and tough little sob for the 4th line....I'll take the guy with size speed and skill and pay him like a late first round pick instead of a top 5-10 pick.  And bonus the kid a jazzed to be a Flyer, says we're his favorite team, maybe that's Russian bullshit to get into our pants but it's a great first impression as opposed to "well i really liked the Rangers growing up"

Yeah from all reports i have seen he was pegged as top 10 talent till the scandal issue.

So this could be like mono was for Coots and help a top talent slide to the Flyers. Time will tell.

I hope reports i seen hold true that he wants to come over and play in the CHL.

That will get him jump started on his north American career.

The film i seen on him has me excited for him.
