Lunatic
The Flyers centers will be alright when two out of three centers who are out (Brier, Couts and Schenn) are healthy , but they really need a hammer on the point. Tonight, whenever Giroux was on the ice, whether PP or not, the Rags had two defenders on him, always leaving the point open! Unfortunately only Mez could take advantage of this. I don't like the idea of trading anyone on the Flyers at this time, but there is a critical need for a PP specialist.
Vincent05
The only way to get a PP QB is by trade. Weber would look great in O&B.
mojo1917
I wish JvR would get healthy or his head on right, or off whatever schnied or doghouse he may be on or in... that kid has a good hard shot, and he could play the point on the PP . he's got enough of a hockey iq to pull it off too . he's got the speed to cover the weakside clearing attempts and to get back on d to prevent the shorthanded breakaway. i wonder what he's done to see his toi slip so far ? if the coaches think out of the box a little we could have a hammer right now
AlaskaFlyerFan
i wonder what he's done to see his toi slip so far ? Rumor is he is playing injured.
doom88
Jvr looks like he is playing hurt, but at the same time, he's too big to camp out up high. He needs some net presence like Hartnell and Simmonds.I would like to see Mesz continuing to blast away from the point. If he gets a little more accurate, he can be very valuable. terp
i wonder what he's done to see his toi slip so far ?As another poster said, he's probably playing injured. He's a fraction of the player we saw last spring. Injured or not, he isn't very comfortable playing point and may never be.
jammer2
@Lunatic I think the answer is Bourdon....he has an excellent shot from the point....I know he played the pp in junior, so he has a history there....not much to lose in trying him out. Lunatic
Jammer,WWhen we drafted him we thought that we wee lucky to get him in the third round. He has been slow to acclimate at the pro level, but he seems to come on recently. I remember him as being slow of foot with a good hockey sense, wiling to be physical and having a really hard shot. It appears that his skating has dramatically improved?
jammer2
@Lunatic I dunno about a dramatic improvement, but he does look slightly more fleet footed. His strong suit has always been positioning, to make up for lack of foot speed.....I expect his to continue, along with minimal skating improvements. I think the guy has proven, he is a legit NHL d-man....he will only get better. Edited December 26, 2011 by jammer2

flyercanuck
True. He was a bust 2 hours after he was drafted.
jammer2
@Vincent05 It's funny, how different organizations have a variance in their d-man developmental time. I guess the average, speaking in pure generalities is 1 to 1 and a half years. I know for a fact the Wings average is around 5 years. Brendan Smith just made their team after being their first round selection in 07. In Smith's case, they let him play out his 4 full years at Wisconsin and only sent him to Grand Rapids for a year and a half. Basically, the Wings insist on perfection in their own zone before they even contemplate a call up. Any sign of defensive zone weakness and BANG...back down for more re-seasoning. Same is true for WIngs forwards....Cory Emmerton, who would have made many, many other teams has been waiting a long time to crack the Wings line up. They are just super patient and the results are obvious. Flyers fall somewhere inbetween, they certainly don't rush kids, but the waiting time (slightly longer for d-man than forwards) is probably around a year and a half. I remember Joni making the team right out of camp (think so, not sure), but that was due to his high draft status more than anything else. He was probably rushed IMHO. Then there is Woywitka, who I seem to remember making it fairly quick, which did not really help his long term development. Bourdon is right on schedule, I think they did a great job at acclimating him to the pro game without stagnating his growth potential. Prefect time for a call up in my books. Vincent05
@flyercanuck and jammerThe Flyers aren't patient enough with these kids, they try to rush these kids into players they want but the kids aren't ready yet. So they just ship them off to another team. Also the coaching carousel has an effect on their developement too, they have to adjust to each coaches style of play to be ready for a call up in case of emergency. I'm just frustrated as they can never develope a goalie or dman.
doom88
Bobrovsky is a goalie...
Vincent05
Bobrovsky is a goalie...Yes he is but we're still not sure if he is the next Parent or Boucher. Time will tell if he's still here at all.
Claude Monet
. Then there is Woywitka, who I seem to remember making it fairly quick, which did not really help his long term development.I don't remember him playing with the Flyers. I remember him being highly regarded as a prospect but was traded before making it to the nhl. wasn't he apart of the comrie deal? yeah that worked out great!I hear Woywitka's name every now and then. Did he ever pan out because I don't remember him making an impact after being traded from the flyers?
flyercanuck
@Claude Monet He's playing for the Rangers.
Claude Monet
the rag's ehhh. I'll have to check him out during the classic. I assume he is on the third pairing?
flyercanuck
@Claude Monet I'm guessing so, and that he's a temporary cheap replacement for Staal.
Claude Monet
When Staal comes back their D is going to be a ******* bitch to play against.......let alone having Lunqvuist in net.
flyercanuck
Not only will the Rangers improve, but so will the Canes. Eric can then get off his guilt trip and resume being a great hockey player.
