AndyS
I know everyone wants to talk about our lack of scoring depth (which I think is starting to take care of itself & will improve even more when Hartnell returns). And we always seem to need help back on the blue line. (Who doesn't?)But I really think that Homer should target a player who can improve our chances in the faceoff circle. It probably wouldn't even be a big name player. That could make a huger difference for the Flyers.Any ideas who might fit that bill? (To be honest, I don't have any suggestions.)
radoran
I thought they should have picked up Konopka or Gaustad for exactly that role. Don't know that I would trade anything of value for either at this point, though.
AJgoal
I wouldn't trade anything for Gaustad's 3.25 million cap hit and 3 points. Konopka is a little easier to swallow at $925k, but I don't really know much about him.
AndyS
I'm hoping that there is someone who fits this description who would not cost much in a trade (or in salary).Every time I look at the Flyers' faceoff stats, I cringe. (Giroux can't take every faceoff himself.)

Crazy.I was thinking "FA signing" in the offseason.Konopka is basically a faceoff specialist with a mean streak - fights a bunch
King Knut
Why not? Crosby takes face offs and immediately skates off the ice. He's better at them then Giroux too.I hate Crosby with a special kind of hate, and I will criticize many parts of his game that most people would say I'm crazy for criticizing, but that whiney cheap piece of filth can win a faceoff and it annoys the hell out of me.(Giroux can't take every faceoff himself.)
doom88
Why not coach the dozen centers already on the team?
King Knut
Bingo. This aint' like having "vision" or a wicked wrister or god given skating ability. They can friggin work on this. It's pathetic that they haven't. They've been pretty bad at it since before Laviolette took over and he doesn't seem to care.As far as trades go, if you can get scoring help they're obviously missing from Jagr and Hartsy, go for it, but not at the cost of anything serious. Likewise with Size on D. They have trouble clearing the porch IMHO and another big guy could help. For the most part I think you have to sink or swim with these guys. They need to learn how to play NHL hockey and excel at it. We may question now whether the JVR trade was a good idea, but without Schenn (despite his early season screw ups) and with Mezo out, this D would be hurting even worse, so I think those discussions are entirely too theoretical to matter. Why not coach the dozen centers already on the team? OH1FlyersFan
Why not coach the dozen centers already on the team? That's what I was thinking as I read through the responses. Glad I read yours before posting a duplicate. You'd think with all the talent we already have on this team (and sometimes it feels like that's an arguable statement, but I believe we really do have talent), you'd think that someone or two would be able to step up. If they can't now, then teach them how. Develop the talent. Quit blowing up the team every season or half season. That said, I'll weaken my own point by saying we need to add a really strong defenseman. Blow up the team for that.....but not for a face-off specialist. Ha! Blow up all things. albertaflyer
Right now this team has far to many holes to really make run at it this year. I still believe they will make the playoffs but won't do much after that. They are really in need of an offensive defence man. Their break outs have been terrible this season. That first pass out of the zone makes such difference. It's hard to tell with the forwards because they haven't been healthy yet this season. But they do need a true face off specialist. The one person that I would look at moving is Briere. I like Briere but I think the time is right to move him. I think you could get good return at the deadline. He has a high cap hit but not much money left owing. I do believe he had front loaded deal. Honestly the one thing I would be looking at is getting a young goalie. I would love one of Ottawa's young guys. Either Bishop or lehner. Watched them both play and they both look pretty solid. Who knows what will happen with Bryz in the future but they have to have some sort of back up plan. I'm one of biggest glass is half full type of Flyers fan. But this season I just have to look at things realistically. Although injuries and their schedule hasn't help matters.
aziz
Konopka is a little easier to swallow at $925k, but I don't really know much about him.goon with a bizarre knack for winning faceoffs. .587% on draws for his career, with around two thousand taken. which...is pretty amazing. he's all but worthless outside of the faceoff circle or punching people in the face, though. he's bad enough offensively and defensively overall that the faceoff thing is less useful than you might think (even though he wins the faceoff, you still have a jody shelley-level talent on the ice), but probably the most useful 13th forward around. $925k isn't a bad price. not worth any real assets, though. Keep in mind young, cheap, offensive puck moving defencemen do not grow on trees.
mojo1917
@B21i'm not sure either team would be willing to make that trade, it's within the division & to the rival.that said , it's not far too fetched in theory, there are other assets in your organization i'd target before depres though. flyercanuck
@B21 A 2nd? What the heck is a 2nd? This IS the Flyers after all. We have no clue what a 2nd is...we've never had one.

flyercanuck
@B21 Trust me...if you guys offered Despres and a 2nd for Simmonds, Homer would counter with Simmonds and a 2nd for Despres. He and Clarke have flushed 2nd round picks like deuces during their tenures as gms. I know you have to give to get, but Simmonds is exactly what this team has been lacking for years. I'd rather not play against him.

B21
@B21pouliot and dumolin were the two i was thinking of...since letang isn't available.I'd do that deal with Dumoulin. Not Pouliot though. As FC said, Simmonds is EXACTLY what has been missing from the Pens. I'd even "overpay" if I were Shero...1st round pick with the assumption it would be a very late 1st round pick. If you are Shero and you see a Simmonds as your missing link (plus he's under contract for a few years at a cap-friendly number) you make the deal in a heartbeat.

flyercanuck
@B21 I remember Despres from junior. You guys have made a lot of good picks defensively over the last few years.

flyercanuck
Vacation was great! Stayed in some pretty remote areas of Costa Rica and some pretty cool lodgings. Had a lot of fun and met some really nice people. Development is destroying the north of that country though. We stayed in Manuel Antonio one night-it used to be a natural wonder. Now it's all beach chairs, para-sailing, seadoo rentals and looks like a Disney version of what it once was. I stopped going to the northern areas because they're all getting huge hotels, condos, gated communities, Walmart, MacDonalds etc. They're losing what made the country so great. It's sad to watch.
