Blues sign former Wild, Stars defenseman Ryan Suter

Recommended Posts

Wow.
He sure is making the rounds in the Central division.
Started in Nashville....then to Minnesota.....Dallas...and now St. Louis.

Trying to come to grips with the new puckpedia site to find out what, exactly, Suter will be banking with his new Blues contract, plus the actual money he is getting from his other teams who are paying him NOT to be there.....

Near as I can tell, in actual money, Suter will still be cashing a check for just over 3M for this coming season adding the money from the Wild, Stars, and now Blues.....throw in another 1.5M or so (4.5M total) if he meets certain performance marks with the Blues.
Not bad for a defender well past his prime.

As for the Blues overall defense, they are honestly looking old n slow and adding Suter just accentuates that, and it looks like a group that isn't going to defend particularly well as a whole.
Colton Parayko is probably St. Louis' best overall defender, but he'd be second tier at best on most teams.
Faulk, Krug, Leddy....all ok defensemen, but I wouldn't classify any of them as lockdown types.....Ryan Suter, IMO, won't move the needle there.

Signing doesn't make a ton of sense for the Blues, unless, they are trying to sneaky tank on the season, in which case some of their higher priced players may ask to be moved and the team can do so for assets.....and as an added bonus, fans get to be treated to more frustrated Jordan Binnington tantrums! :shifty:

@TropicalFruitGirl26 Yeah the comments on the Athletic were really mixed. Some were looking at it as a low risk, high reward move, while others were complaining about adding another boat anchor to an already old and slow defense. Some were speculating the Blues were going to try and move Krug or one of the other more expensive defensemen now that they have Suter on a cheap deal...

Didn't know that the Blues were so desperate, but here's the contract structure:

So yeah, he will get bonuses only by playing... $3M paid by the Blues + the Wild buyout + The Stars buyout. Finally, maybe the best way to make a ton of money is to be a prima donna installing country clubs where you play.

I love fans who are so excited about getting a guy that two other teams are literally paying to not play for them that they're willing to get rid of actual NHL players in pursuit of...

I think they knew about Krug's ankle issue and brought in Suter as a just in case and if they didn't need him, they would put him on waivers. There were definitely better choices out there but maybe they didn't want to sign in St Louis so they took the cheapest option they could get.
