(And my last weekend with old and alternate logos!) After this there are still in-season exhibition/non-conference games, especially for the Bisons with seven such games. The Bisons have lost four straight games to the former-Nor’westers, now Thunderwolves, over the last two seasons. In 2022 and 2023 the two teams had a 3-way round-robin with Regina in a GPAC-reunion weekend. In both seasons, the Herd had just one home weekend in the pre-season. (In addition to games against the Manitoba Moose.) I would like to see some of the Bisons who were scratched twice last weekend hit the ice this weekend, and to see if defencemen Colby Jaquet and Ryan Gottfried are even on the roster. Both are listed at Elite Prospects, but not at GoBisons.ca. Of those who played last weekend, the premium newcomer line of Zaplitny-Stotts-Bruce was extremely impressive, and the sophomore line of Zimmerman-Trimble-Boucher was beyond all hopes. Last year they combined for five goals and two assists. Boucher himself had a hat-trick last Saturday, and defenceman Parker Malchuk scored with that line on Friday. The assists on those four goals gave those players more points on one weekend than they had last year! Lakehead goaltender Christian Cicigoi stopped a 2-on-1 break, otherwise not much for good chances. The sides exchanged goals in the 2nd. Riley Stotts scored a powerplay goal to tie the game, Ben Badalamenti restored Lakehead’s lead (on a shot Braden Holt would like to have back), Hayden Ostir again tied it on a powerplay, the Justin Paul put the Wolves ahead to stay (converting a 2-on-1 on a Bison turnover). The 3rd period was fairly uneventful, with Malte Hasselgren scoring an unassisted powerplay goal. Like the opening goal, no Bison played the body. One oddity was the three delay-of-game calls, two on Lakehead. The glass at the Dak is not very high. The Bisons fall to 2-3-0 and Lakehead is 3-0-0. However, as the period closed Ben Badalamenti took a double minor for high-sticking Kian Calder in the face, giving the Bisons a powerplay to start the 2nd. Once the 2nd period started, Bison Riley Stotts opened the scoring in 32 seconds. The Mutts tied it up when Malte Hasselgren chipped one in on a goalmouth scramble mid-period. Cade Zaplitny scored similar goals in the 2nd period (to make it 2-1) and then early in the 3rd (to make it 3-1). The 2nd period goal saw him exchange passes with Skylar Bruce and the 3rd period saw those two and Stotts throw it around. The balance of the 3rd period saw precious few good (or any) scoring chances. At 12:25 Lakehead used the pile-up in the crease tactic. There were a couple of coincidental minors called but Bison goaltender Kolby Thornton was tossed. So Ross Hawryluk finished the game in net. Then Bison d-man Parker Malchuk was cross-checked from behind and retaliated with a two-handed cross-check to the face/neck of a Mutt forward and got a 5-minute major. With barely a minute left, Lakehead did come within a goal using the pile into the crease method. The goal counted, but they never did announce which player was awarded the goal. The result means that the Bisons end their USports pre-season with a 3-3-0 record, and Lakehead finishes at 3-1-0. The Manitoba Moose have uploaded their training camp schedule (linked) and their games against the Bisons are, as scheduled, on October 3rd and 8th. We now have confirmation that those games are at the “Hockey for All Centre” and will start at 6:00 p.m. OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 5 ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 2 Links: ➤ UofA: Instagram ➤ UofS: Schedule & Results The Cold Lake series is a sweep for the Banjo-Mutts, who end their pre-season at an impressive 7-1-0, which includes that 2-1 win over the Bisons. That is two wins each against Holy Trinity and SFU. While this is not great preparation, it probably does not take much to get a playoff berth for them. Three out of four teams in a division which includes Holy Trinity will qualify for the playoffs this year. Of note, the Bison starting goaltender from last Friday night, Braden Holt, is on the Moose try-out roster. On the weekend, the Herd is off to the Excited States to face two new opponents - the St. Thomas Tommies and the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs. This version of the Tommies is based in St. Paul, Minnesota, not to be confused with their namesakes from New Brunswick who once toiled in the AUS. These are the first two of five games the Bisons will play against NCAA teams. Both sides were sub-.500 last year but are highly touted by the pollsters. St. Thomas is first in a CCHA coaches’ poll, and UMD is ranked 18th nationally in the USCHO poll. The Bulldogs play in the very high-calibre NCHC. I got there mid-way through the 1st period when the Moose led 1-0. The Bisons had just five defencemen dressed, an dlost one in the 2nd period. Here’s how they lined up: MANITOBA BISONS Goal: 31 Holt (34 Hawryluk) Defence: 24 Wareham - 25 Calder 5 Casey - 6 Fry 29 King - 2 Whittle Forwards: 20 Zaplitny - 22 Stotts - 17 Bruce 9 Alarie - 18 Hooker - 11 Ostir 10 Paulhus - 28 Behun - 26 Boucher 14 Zimmerman - 12 Trimble - 13 Sutter Scratches: G: 30 Thornton 4 Malchuk - 8 Toth - 15 Bonni F: 16 Joss - 19 Arpin - 21 Pasternak - 23 Lane MANITOBA MOOSE Goal: 50 DiVencentiis (33 Neaton) Defence: 58 Louis-Jean - 57 McLean 43 Sward - 8 Zloty 3 Musser - 36 McDougall Forwards: 10 Conley - 29 Chyzowski - 51 Shin 48 Golder - 17 Zhilkin - 25 Ford 40 Torgersson - 14 King - 53 Montgomery 49 Liwiski - 37 Nikkanen - 20 Empey The Bisons started the night with Michael King as a forward, and Dexter Whittle on defence. Whittle must have been injured in the 2nd period, whereupon King moved to the blueline. This meant that their only four defencemen were four 2nd year players who last year were competing to avoid being healthy scratches. Malchuk, Toth, Bonni, and Whittle have been their top four defencemen this season, and none were available. On a 2nd period powerplay, the Bisons even used a 5-forward alignment. Braden Holt handled a lot of shots in the Bison goal, after participating in the Moose camp during the week. The Moose outshot the Bisons 59-9. The count may not have been completely accurate, but it was certainly one-sided. Those missing blueliners are definitely needed for the weekend games. Hollywood
October 4, 2024: ONE SHOOTOUT, THREE WHIPPINS, ON OPENING NIGHT The Bisons had a rare Friday night off, in between a game with the Moose and a weekend in Minnesota. The rest of the CW (and most of the OUA and AUS, for that matter) kicked off the regular season as well. Last year’s stark divide between the haves and have nots has shown early signs of a repeat performance. After experiencing a power outage, and the garbage Rogers Cable (who took over Shaw out here), here’s what happened. Despite the shots being level at 12-12, the Banjo-Mutts built a 4-0 1st period lead. Appears to have been a tussle at the end of the 2nd period, with each side getting a pair of roughing calls. Their roster page lists 11 forwards, 9 defencemen, and 3 goaltenders. That East European set of recruits appear to have vanished. In this game, the final Bluegar goal was an empty-netter, so the game was not atypical of a Spartans’ game from the last two years. However, that thin roster makes this team very vulnerable. The CW must surely be regretting a playoff format where 3-of-4 make the playoffs from Holy Trinity’s division. The stats look a little off. Determining shots on goal is hard. You have to go to the individual stats tab on the above link. The shots were apparently 61-25, which seems generous. There was a live link from Sidearm Sports, but that link vanished sometime after the game was over. I could not find the lines, but it is good news that the Bisons had d-man Evan Toth back in the line-up. Braden Holt was in goal with Kolby Thornton backing up. Otherwise the line-up was the same as for the Moose game last Thursday (plus Toth, minus Andre Sutter), with none of the other recent scratches coming back. The Bisons opened the scoring on a goal by Eric Alarie, giving them a 1-0 lead heading into the 2nd period. However, the Bullfrogs scored five 2nd period goals, two on the PP, to put the game away. Two more 3rd period goals (one by Aaron Pionk, brother of the Jets’ Neil Pionk) before Owen Wareham closed the scoring for the Bisons. Hollywood
October 8, 2024: MOOSE BEAT BISONS AND BORROWED PLAYERS MANITOBA BISONS 2 MANITOBA MOOSE 5 Links: ➤ UofM: Team Website ➤ Moose: Team Website I arrived about 7 minutes into the game, due to it starting at 6:00 p.m., and at that time the Moose had a 1-0 lead. There were no line-up sheets at the game, unlike last Thursday’s game. The first thing I noticed was that the Bisons had three players with no names on their jerseys, #3, #16, and #27, all of whom played defence. So I infer that #16 was not new forward Mitchell Joss (who has yet to dress in the games I have seen). I believe that they were extra Moose players. Here’s how they lined up: MANITOBA BISONS Goal: 30 Thornton (34 Hawryluk) Defence: 16 ????? - 25 Calder 3 ????? - 27 ????? 24 Wareham - 5 Casey Forwards: 10 Paulhus - 22 Stotts - 17 Bruce 9 Alarie - 18 Hooker - 11 Ostir 14 Zimmerman - 29 King - 28 Behun 13 Sutter - 12 Trimble - 26 Boucher Scratches: G: 31 Holt 2 Whittle - 4 Malchuk - 6 Fry - 8 Toth - 15 Bonni F: 16 Joss - 19 Arpin - 20 Zaplitny - 21 Pasternak - 23 Lane MANITOBA MOOSE Goal: 32 Milic (30 Thiessen) Defence: 23 Kuzmin - 2 Bauer 7 Lundmark - 44 Salomonsson 6 Sautner - 4 Barteaux Forwards: 10 Conley - 17 Zhilkin - 19 Chibrikov 18 Shaw - 25 Ford - 27 Suess 49 Liwiski - 37 Nikkanen - 20 Empey 48 Golder - 14 King - 40 Torgersson Having a full complement of defencemen made a huge difference for the Bisons. In the 1st period, I missed the first Moose goal. However, when Kevin Conley scored from the high slot to make it 2-0 it was contrary to the flow of the game, as the Bisons were carrying the play. The Bisons took a penalty at the end of the 1st period, giving the Moose a powerplay to open the 2nd period. Nikita Chibrikov converted a nice pass to make it 3-0. That goal changed the flow, and had the Bisons chasing the game for a while. Eventually, Mark Liwiski deflected a point shot to make it 4-0 heading into the 3rd period. The 3rd period was a good one for the Bisons. Michael King had a break down the right wing boards then swooped in at a sever angle and whipped one home, to make it 4-1. Not long thereafter, Cameron Trimble deflected one in to make it 4-2. Suddenly, this was getting interesting. The comeback was halted when Elia Salomonsson’s point shot found the 5-hole on Kolby Thornton. That ended the scoring at 5-2. The shot clock was not operating, but I infer that this was not the onslaught we saw last Thursday. The Bisons now have nothing but a normal league schedule until the Chrsitams break. Combined with a bumper crop of recruits and many pundits had them slated for a return to the nationals. Their early season record, however, is dubious. They are 4-0-0 against MacEwan (two each regular season and exhibition), but 0-4-1 against other CW teams, and in their Irish tour beat Carleton and lost to the Belfast Giants. In the last four years, the Monkeys lead the Herd 9 wins to 3. Their last series was way back in November 2023 and was a split. Meanwhile, the Bisons were a so-so 2-2-0 against CW teams and 1-1-0 against Lakehead this pre-season. Then came a 4-losses-in-6 days stretch against the AHL’s Manitoba Moose and STU and UMD from the NCAA. The big concern is the injury bug. Will they even have six healthy blueliners for this series? No series previews are posted yet. ELSEWHERE IN THE CW U.B.C. Things don’t get any easier this week as they venture into Cowtown to face the Bluegars, the CW’s perpetual Undercats. Will this finally be the year that Mount Royal breaks through to make it to the nationals? Whenever MRU plays, you have to pay attention to their high end talent, in particular Connor Bouchard. He had 57 points in 26 games a year ago. Each side had 3 of top 10 scorers in the CW last year, and 4 of the top 14. Too bad that all four games on Friday night start at the same time. Michael King also moved to the point to be the 6th d-man. Grady Lane also suited up, for the first time in games I watched. Second, the teams played a dead-even 1st period, where the shots were 11-10 for the Evil Monkeys and the score was 1-1. The 3rd period was also even, with shots 10-9 for the Bisons and the Monkeys leading 3-2. But that 2nd period made no sense. The Apes scored all three goals and outshot the Bisons 24-4. For the first 11 minutes of the period, the Monkeys had 22 shots, i.e. two per minute. There were loads of penalties. In the 2nd period, the Bisons had five minor penalties in the first 10 minutes. Hence the shots and scoring differential. On the night, the Bisons went 3-for-10 and the Monkeys went 2-for-8. Still, with the score 4-1, the Bisons started the 3rd period on a powerplay. A golden opportunity to catch up, I thought. But noooooooooooooooooo. A shorthanded goal made it 5-1 and the Bisons were cooked. The rematch goes Saturday at 3:00 central, 2:00 mountain. The T-irds scored with less than 5 minutes left in the 3rd period to lead 3-0. Game over, right? Nuh-uh. Four powerplay goals in the last three minutes gave the Bluegars an incredible win. In fact, MRU scored three goals in the last minute, and two goals in the last 9 seconds! This denied the T-irds even a single point. If that isn’t wild enough, Bluegar goaltender was replaced with 4:32 left and the T-irds leading 2-0. Replacement goaltender Harmon Laser-Hume came on and faced one shot, and it went in. After about a 25-minute delay, the call was made to move the game to Brunswick Steel, the only unoccupied rink of the six sheets at The Co-operators Centre. The teams and the nearly 200 fans in attendance made their way down to the far end of the facililty and after a brief warmup, play resumed. My Saturday schedule gets totally disrupted, and it does not seem so bad if I can at least go to a local arena and watch the game live. As a result, it can be hard to get into a game sometimes. This one was kinda that way. But here’s what I saw. The Bison defence is really thin. They have just eight of them, four of whom are sophomores from Junior A. Two of their top four are currently injured, as is one of their bottom four. They had a bumper crop of recruits up front, but just two defencemen. Against a strong offensive team, they will suffer when short-staffed. That’s what happened here. The Evil Monkeys were led by rookie Sean Tschigerl (apparently pronounced like “Shirl”, i.e. short for “Shirley”) who scored a hat-trick. Braden Holt did well in the Bison goal, but I thought they would rotate him with Kolby Thornton. OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD U.B.C. MRU does not add links to their game stories for boxscores or video, so I attached a link to their X/Twitter video post. There were no shots counted by the statistician in this one, but the scoreboard in the arena kept an unofficial total, of 32-14 in favour of MRU. There was never more than a one-goal gap troughout this game. The Bluegars GWG was a short-handed marker with less than four minutes left. So ironic, given that the Friday collapse was largely attributed to a string of penalties with put the Bluegars on a seemingly endless powerplay. The teams last played in the regular season on November 10th & 11th (see links). This year, they have already played three exhibition games and will face each other six more times in the regular series under the new format. I am anxious to see what sort of blueline crew the Bisons will have this weekend. Last weekend they had just five (two of the top four, and three of the bottom four). Both sides are winless. However, the Bisons have played just twice and have two losses to the Evil Monkeys. Meanwhile the Banjo-Cats were swept by both the Banjo-Mutts and MacEwan Family Guys, whilst being outscored 21-5. Of note, Sask swept Calgary, who swept UBC. Alberta sputtered through the pre-season, so this is really their first big test. Of note for the Bisons, they (finally) had six regular defencemen dressed, all of whom had a fair amount of ice time. Here’s how they aligned: MANITOBA Goal: 31 Holt (30 Thornton) Defence: 15 Bonni - 4 Malchuk 8 Toth - 25 Calder 5 Casey - 24 Wareham Forwards: 9 Alarie - 18 Hooker - 11 Ostir 23 Lane - 19 Arpin - 28 Behun 20 Zaplitny - 22 Stotts - 17 Bruce 14 Zimmerman - 12 Trimble- 26 Boucher Scratches: G: 34 Hawryluk 2 Whittle - 6 Fry F: 10 Paulhus - 13 Sutter - 16 Joss - 21 Pasternak - 29 King REGINA Goal: 39 Evanoff (35 Fellner) Defence: 4 Reimer - 3 Third 20 Holoien - 22 McNutt 7 Sass - 28 Heward Forwards: 18 Whyte - 11 Runke - 27 Barlage 8 J Brook - 23 Pearce - 19 Bjorklund 17 McMillen - 12 Houk - 37 Belitsky 9 Shindle - 44 Friedt-Mohr - 21 Borysiuk Scratches: G: none 5 Fishley - 16 Schmidt F: 14 Culling - 15 Kesslering - 23 Pearce - 24 Wills - 32 Steele This game was peculiar in that the Bisons built a big lead whilst being outshot, and then they started to dominate the game without scoring. Hayden Ostir made it 1-0 after 20 seconds, then Skyler Bruce made it 2-0 after 1:37. Codey Behun made it 3-0 on the Bisons’ 5th shot of the period. (I hasten to add that the period shot totals are usually revised at the end of the period.) The Banjo-Cats rallied in the 2nd period. Their pressure gave them an early PP. However, Behun scored his second goal of the evening shorthanded when the Kittens were farting around in their slot and turned the puck over. This is something they did at least four times in the game. However, they recovered and scored on that same PP to make it 4-1, and then 34 seconds later to make it 4-2. There was no more scoring for the rest of the period, which (oddly) saw the Bisons rack up most of their shots on goal. Riley Zimmerman (reunited on the line with Trimble and Boucher) put one in on a goalmouth scramble to start the 3rd. This gave the Bisons a 5-2 lead, quickly dashed to a 5-3 lead when Banjo-Cat Payden Bjorklund scored his 2nd of the game less than two minutes later. From there on in, the Bisons were on cruise control until an empty-netter put it away. I missed the 1st period, where the T-irds outshot Holy Trinity by 18-3, and outscored them 4-1. The rest of the game was 1-1, with shots 22-21 in favour of the T-irds. So maybe the Spartans are showing some progress. From the parts I saw, they weren’t half bad. It seems I must pay attention to roster size this year. Trinity was one man short. UBC therefore gets the sweep, but there are still oodles of questions about their team. Starting 0-4-0 against Manitoba and MacEwan may have buried them. That explains why they came out like gangbusters. The explanation for the Bisons coming out lethargic is hard to explain. For reasons I do not understand they shuffled two forwards (Trimble and Boucher out, Paulhus and Sutter in) which caused their 3rd and 4th lines to be shuffled. The Bisons trailed 4-1 after two periods, and then stormed back in the 3rd to tie the game. It was quite a turnaround, and it seemed that Regina was spent. However, d-man Brandon Casey fell at the left point as the Bisons were going after the winning goal. This gave Kade Runke a clean break. However, Casey dove from his knees to trip Runke. However, the Kittens were still on the attack and scored to regain the lead with less than 7 minutes left. An empty-netter was the cherry on top. Oddly, this series is the only split series after three weeks of regular season CW play.
