Who are "these fans"?

We need top end talent. The way pretty much every team gets said talent is through the draft. The Oilers aren't giving us McDavid or Draisaitl. Florida isn't giving us Barkov and Ekblad. If you can get that kind of talent, you then fill in the holes with acquirable talent. But you don't "start" with 29-34 year olds.

You need to look for the doozie in which it was said you build through free agency and use the draft to supplement.....

You mean like pre-salary cap?

That's how Philly (and many others) rolled then....and we still didn't win.

i swear even if we end up with top end talent and still lose like the sixers, you are going make every excuse in the book and be happy with that and if we win a cup with no top end talent, you going to find some reason to be upset about it.

because every team i listed so many times that won cups without tanking, you are still being negative about it because you cant stand watching a team without top end players, well that's how the draft and lottery works, you are one that cant accept it, especially when we were supposed to get kane and we had the worst record and got jvr, yet it's the management's fault and not the nhl right?

When they consistently select the wrong player, yes, it's definitely management's fault.

Who's the sixers? 🤨  If we ever assemble top end talent, that'd be great. If we win a cup with no top end talent, then wake up, you're dreaming.

Every team you've listed so many times? Theres been like 2 in the last 20 years. I can't accept that it's pretty obvious what you need to win a championship (top end talent) yet the Flyers constantly pretend you don't. 50 years later...FIFTY YEARS, and they still don't think we need it.

Show me where I've complained we didn't get Kane in that draft. Go ahead, show me. I'll wait.

Oh hell yeah!!!! After I had a stroke almost 11 years ago, my neurologist said that smoking pot was good for me to help with the migraines that I now get. I'd try it. No doubt about it.

yeah your right, let's keep building this team like sens and sabres, get screwed in the draft, dont make the playoffs and seeing you complain about coaching for the next 50 years instead of getting experience players.

Once again, great examples of bad management. You're making it easier and easier to build through the draft. That's how you build winners - through the draft. It allows for financial flexibility, it allows for building of a great farm system and it allows for making those kinds of gone run swings you need to take to try to get your team over the top.

You mention Ottawa and Buffalo and look at the messed they've created. After Bryan Murray passed away in Ottawa, he left Pierre Dorion with a superb farm system and team. Dorion pissed it all away with continual bad moves and then when the Senators were forced to rebuild, he still managed to bungle that up by selecting piss poor players and bad trades. Bad management kills. Doesn't matter if you build through the draft, trade everything or sign free agents and burn valuable cap space. Now you're seeing that with what Briere has to fix.

You and your logic, common sense, and fact-based posts.

But experienced player fantasy response!!!!

A great example is Florida.

Florida signed and traded for the vast majority of the roster.

But they couldn't have acquired Barkov and Ekblad without the draft. And they're not in the Final without them.

Teams don't typically let that kind of top talent get onto the market.

Except for - to your point - bad management.

When you're able to pick up a Vezina-caliber goalie and a #2 and #6 overall, you're exploiting three absolutely terrible GMs to do it.

Agreed, and sadly for the Flyers, we're usually one of the the absolutely terrible GMs being exploited.

Instead of looking at the 2 worst case scenarios, why don't you look at all the cup winning teams over the last 20 years and see how many 1st and 2nd overalls are on each team. Of course there will be the odd team that either gets a not so great 1st overall, or has completely incompetent management (like the last Flyer GM, that you thought was doing a great job and left the team in shambles). And actually, Ottawa IS a good example...rhyme off all their 1st and 2nd overalls on the team. They have none.

You can argue it all you want, but over 90% of cup winners (or finalists) in the last couple decades have multiple top picks on their team. The other proof is in the Flyers NOT doing that, and being cupless for FIVE DECADES!

You have to go back to 2008 for the Cup winner team that doesn't have at least two top five picks.

And that situation - getting a Zetterberg, Datsyuk, and Lidstrom out of the first round - doesn't exist any more because after they did it teams took scouting in Europe 1000% more seriously.

Any position that starts with "this one time, sixteen years ago" isn't one that should be taken particularly seriously.
