Brewin Flames
Game # 35 Flames 2 Seattle 2 Chris Driedger makes 37 saves in NHL return as Kraken hold off Flames 2-1 ByAP Updated: Dec 28, 2023, 02:01 am CALGARY, Alberta -- — Making his first NHL start in nearly 20 months, Chris Driedger made 37 saves to backstop the Seattle Kraken to a 2-1 victory over the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night. “He was outstanding for us tonight, right from the first period through,” said Seattle coach Dave Hakstol. “A couple saves on the PK were difference-makers and he had to make one more for us right before the buzzer. Really happy for him. He’s worked hard to have that opportunity. He was a difference-maker for us tonight.” Kailer Yamamoto and Alex Wennberg scored for Seattle (13-14-9). The Kraken extended their points streak to seven games (5-0-2) and moved ahead of Calgary in the Pacific Division standings. Nazem Kadri scored for Calgary (14-16-5). Making his fourth straight start for the Flames, Jacob Markstrom had 19 saves. After the conclusion of his first season with the Kraken, Driedger tore his ACL while playing for Canada in the gold medal game of the 2022 world championships. The resulting surgery sidelined him most of last season before he returned to action in late February with Seattle’s American Hockey League affiliate in Coachella, where he played for the rest of the season. “The most adversity I’ve ever faced in my career,” said Driedger, whose last NHL start was May 1, 2022. “It’s been a long road, lot of hours spent with the medical staff putting in hours when the guys are skating and doing my own thing and watching from the stands. To come out and finally get back in, it was pretty emotional.” His biggest stop, keeping the game tied, came on a Flames two-man advantage in the second period when he went from post to post to rob Elias Lindholm at the side of the net after he had been set up for a one-timer by a cross-crease pass from Connor Zary. “He did amazing,” said Wennberg. “He played games down there but it’s a different game up here and just making those big saves. He’s winning the game for us.” Tied at 1, the game-winner came off the stick of Wennberg six minutes into the third when he took a pass from Jared McCann and zipped a quick shot that beat Markstrom inside the post on the short side. Seattle opened the scoring 2:24 into the game on its first shot when Vince Dunn’s pass sprang Yamamoto on a breakaway. Kadri scored on the power play six minutes later. “You try to bear down in those situations, of course, we want to score and we want to capitalize on those opportunities,” said Kadri. “But at the same time, he made some great saves, timely saves to keep his team in it on the road.” It was Seattle’s 200th regular season game in franchise history. Defenseman Adam Larsson is the only player to have played in every one. At 304 consecutive games, Larsson has the league’s fifth-longest active Iron Man streak.
Brewin Flames
Game # 36 Flames 4 Flyers 3 Flames outlast Philadelphia 4-3 to end Flyers' 9-game road points streak ByAP Updated: Jan 1, 2024, 01:11 am CALGARY, Alberta -- — Mikael Backlund, Dennis Gilbert, Nazem Kadri and Blake Coleman scored and the Calgary Flames outlasted the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 on Sunday night. Jacob Markstrom made 27 saves to help the Flames improve to 15-16-5. Andrew Mangiapane had three assists and Jonathan Huberdeau added an assist to snap a 12-game points drought. “It’s confidence. Just making the plays when they’re there. I cannot complicate it on myself,” Huberdeau said. “That’s what I did tonight. I’ve just got to build on that and do the same thing over and over.” Mangiapane entered the night with a goal and two assists in his previous 12 games. “It’s good for, obviously, my confidence levels,” Mangiapane said. "Just have a good game and I think of late, I’ve been trending in the right direction.” Rasmus Ristolainen, with his first of the season, and Bobby Brink and Egor Zamula scored for Philadelphia and Sam Ersson made 28 saves. The Flyers dropped to 19-12-5, failing to earn points for the first time in their last 10 road games. “Every now and again we’re going to have games like this,” Ersson said. “It’s about finding ways to win games and today we came up short, but I think, as we showed at the end, that we push and we have that mentality that we don’t give in and we don’t give up. Obviously, a tough loss but some good things to take with us.” There were four goals in the last 5:31, with Kadri beginning the spree to give Calgary a 3-1 lead. With Ersson off for an extra attacker, Brink scored with 3:24 to go. Coleman scored into an empty net with 2:18 remaining. With Ersson off again, Zamula scored with 1:24 left. “No quitting at the end,” Flyers center Sean Couturier said. “Too bad we didn’t show up the first two periods.”
Brewin Flames
Game # 37 Flames 3 Wild 1 Mangiapane, Huberdeau score as Flames beat Wild 3-1 ByAP Updated: Jan 2, 2024, 11:28 pm ST. PAUL, Minn. -- — Andrew Mangiapane and Jonathan Huberdeau scored first-period goals for Calgary, and Blake Coleman added an empty-netter as the Flames held on to beat the short-handed Minnesota Wild 3-1 on Tuesday night. Jacob Markstrom made 28 saves in net to earn the win. Mangiapane’s seventh goal of the season opened the scoring at 11:40 of the first period. The third-line winger redirected a shot from Rasmus Andersson and bounced the puck past Wild goalie Marc-Andre Fleury for a 1-0 lead. Huberdeau made it 2-0 with 23.1 seconds remaining in the first period. He cut toward the net and fired a back-hand shot past Fleury for his fifth of the season. It was Huberdeau’s first goal since Nov. 20 and just his second point in the last 14 games. “That one obviously felt good, and especially to finish it off with a win,” Huberdeau said. “I think lately, we’ve been playing better, so I think it was good to get chemistry on our line too.” After the game, Huberdeau said assistant coach Marc Savard deserved some credit for taping Huberdeau's stick the past two games. Huberdeau had an assist on Sunday against Philadelphia before Tuesday's goal that ended an 18-game goal drought. Minnesota remains without leading scorer Kirill Kaprizov, who was injured Saturday against Winnipeg. Goalie Filip Gustavsson and forward Vinni Lettieri were both placed on injured reserve with lower-body injuries, meaning they’ll each miss at least a week. Wild forward Marcus Foligno missed his first game of the season Tuesday with a lower-body injury and was replaced in the lineup by Sammy Walker. Markstrom wasn't tested much in the first two periods, facing a total of 12 shots through two. But the Flames goalie stopped all 17 Wild shots he faced in the third period to help Calgary hold on for a win. In six games since returning from an injury, Markstrom is 4-2-0 and has allowed 11 total goals in those six games. “He’s been excellent," said Flames head coach Ryan Huska. "He was our best player by far tonight. We’re going to need him to continue to be.” Pat Maroon put the Wild on the board with his first goal since Nov. 30 to make it 2-1. Maroon tapped in the rebound from a Nic Petan shot past Markstrom at the 9:28 mark of the second period. Fleury stopped 30 shots in the loss, two days after playing in his 1,000th career NHL game. Minnesota has lost three straight. The Wild were outshot 13-7 in the first period. “I thought the second and third period we dictated the game and gave ourselves a chance to win the game,” said Minnesota head coach John Hynes. “Tonight the puck didn’t go in for us. I thought their goaltender was excellent.” Coleman's empty-netter, his 14th goal of the season, came with 56.7 seconds remaining after the Wild pulled Fleury. Tuesday marked the first of a four-game road trip for Calgary. The Flames now have a stretch of three games in four days beginning Thursday.
Brewin Flames
Game # 38 Flames 6 Preds 3 Flames score 4 goals in 1st, beat Predators 6-3 for 3rd straight win ByAP Updated: Jan 4, 2024, 11:23 pm NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- — Connor Zary, Blake Coleman, Rasmus Andersson and Yegor Sharangovich each had a goal and an assist in the Calgary Flames’ 6-3 victory over the Nashville Predators on Thursday night. Nazem Kadri and Noah Hanifin also scored and Dan Vladar made 30 saves in the Flames’ third straight victory. “We want to gain a little bit of traction with stringing points together,” Flames coach Ryan Huska said. “It becomes important. That next game now becomes the most important game of the year for us.” Filip Forsberg, Colton Sissons and Michael McCarron scored and Juuse Saros made 21 saves for Nashville. The Predators had won two in a row. “A lot of sloppy hockey, a lot of slow-twitch thinking and playing, and not ready to start,” Nashville coach Andrew Brunette said. “I don’t think we did anything very well.” The teams combined for six goals in a wild opening period. Calgary struck first, with Zary and Coleman scoring 27 seconds apart at 4:45 and 5:12. “We came out pretty hard and we kind of took control of the game,” Zary said. “We got the lead and we were able to play with the lead. That’s something we want to do more of.” Zary’s goal came on the power play. Calgary entered Thursday with the NHL’s 30th-ranked power play, clicking at just 12%. Forsberg halved the Flames’ lead at 6:09 with his team-leading 19th goal. Just prior to the game, Forsberg was named an All Star for the second time in his career. “It was definitely not good enough and I think we got what we deserved,” Forsberg said. Sissons’ goal with 4:10 remaining in the first was his 12th of the season, equaling his total from last season. He scored a career-high 15 goals in 2018-19. Andersson scored with 1:16 remaining in the first with the teams skating 4-on-4 to send the Flames to the intermission up 4-2. Entering Thursday, Calgary’s opponents had outscored them 42-29 in the first period. “We knew it was a matter of time we’d start scoring first,” Coleman said. “It’s a lot easier to win on the road if you can get up early.” After posting a shutout Tuesday night against Chicago, Saros struggled early, allowing four goals on 11 shots against in the first period. Hanifin got the only goal of the middle frame on a tap in with 1.6 seconds remaining. Saros stopped 14 of 15 shots faced in the second. He was replaced by Kevin Lankinen to start the third. Lankinen made 13 saves in relief. McCarron scored a long-range goal at 2:15 of the third when his attempted dump-in went off Vladar’s blocker and into the net.
Brewin Flames
Game # 39 Flames 2 Flyers 3 Travis Konecny scores short-handed goal as Philadelphia Flyers top the Calgary Flames 3-2 ByAP Updated: Jan 6, 2024, 05:20 pm PHILADELPHIA -- — Travis Konecny snapped a third-period tie with a short-handed goal, and the Philadelphia Flyers stopped a four-game slide with a spirited 3-2 win over the Calgary Flames on Saturday. Morgan Frost had a goal and an assist for Philadelphia, which had dropped six of seven overall. Sean Couturier also scored, and Carter Hart made 22 saves. Konecny, the Flyers' All-Star representative, snapped a wrist shot past Flames goalie Jakob Markstrom on a breakaway 2:27 into the final period. It was his NHL-best fifth short-handed goal and No. 21 on the season overall. The Flyers lead the NHL with 10 short-handed goals this season. “What’s nice is we’re getting these chances but we’re not necessarily cheating for them,” said Couturier, who is also a big part of the Flyers' penalty kill. “They’re just sort of presenting themselves. With the speed (Konecny) and (Scott Laughton) have they can jump all over loose pucks and create offense. “What’s even better is we’re not just scoring on those penalties, but we’re killing them. Getting an extra one is a bonus, and that’s probably the difference tonight.” Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar scored for Calgary, which had won three in a row. Markstrom made 39 saves. The Flames had leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the second, but the Flyers came back each time. “The first period was OK but then I thought the second and third, we got outworked,” Flames coach Ryan Huska said. “They were the better team. Jakob was the only reason the game was close.” Frost was standing by the far post for a tap-in of a Sean Walker shot at 4:15. Couturier knocked home a rebound of a Frost shot at 16:06, tying at 2 with his 10th goal of the season. Frost was scratched by Flyers coach John Tortorella for the team’s previous game. He asked Tortorella for a sitdown on Thursday and the two hashed out some differences, creating common ground and getting Frost back in the lineup. “I had some things that I wanted to get off my chest,” Frost said. “It was a good back and forth. I want to be in the lineup, obviously. I think I should be in the lineup. It’s kind of a wake-up call when you get pulled out like that.” Calgary thought it had tied the game with six minutes to play, but the goal was waved off when Connor Zary was whistled for an interference penalty for dumping Flyers defenseman Nick Seeler to the ice. The game got a bit chippy in the second period as the teams combined for 30 minutes in penalties. There was a fight between two top-line forwards, Joel Farabee for Philadelphia and Elias Lindholm for the Flames. The Flyers celebrated the birthday of their late founder, Hockey Hall of Famer Ed Snider, throughout the game. Dozens of alumni were in attendance and new Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle L. Parker dropped the ceremonial first puck with three of Snider’s children present for the festivities. “The kind of game, the style of game it was, I feel like he had us playing that way up there,” Tortorella said, extending his hands and moving his fingers as if to indicate a puppeteer. Brewin Flames
Game # 40 Flames 3 Hawks 4 Blackwell helps the Blackhawks beat the Flames 4-3 in first game without Bedard ByAP Updated: Jan 7, 2024, 06:57 pm CHICAGO -- — Back at home after a disastrous trip, the depleted Chicago Blackhawks desperately needed an encouraging performance. With Colin Blackwell leading the way, they got one. Blackwell had two goals and an assist, and Chicago beat the Calgary Flames 4-3 on Sunday in the Blackhawks' first game since Connor Bedard was sidelined by a broken jaw. “I think you can create a storyline for each game and each part of the season,” Chicago defenseman Connor Murphy said, “and for us, I think that's a great way to go at it now, is realizing we have a lot of guys out and for everyone to come and band together quick and win games by work ethic, really.” Nikita Zaitsev added a goal and an assist for last-place Chicago, which had dropped five in a row and seven of eight overall. Philipp Kurashev also scored, and Petr Mrazek made 28 saves. Bedard’s jaw was fractured when the No. 1 overall pick in last year's draft was hit by New Jersey defenseman Brendan Smith during Friday night's 4-2 loss to the Devils. Chicago then lost Nick Foligno when he broke a finger on his left hand in a fight with Smith. Nazem Kadri had two goals for Calgary, which closed out a 2-2-0 road trip after losing 3-2 at Philadelphia on Saturday. Andrew Mangiapane also scored, and Jonathan Huberdeau had two assists. “Not good enough," Flames forward Mikael Backlund said. "If we want to be a playoff team, that’s a game we’ve got to win, find a way to win. Yeah, it wasn’t good enough.” Blackwell scored the first goal of the game with a well-placed wrist shot 4:32 into the first period. He made it 4-2 with a power-play goal with 5:23 left, beating Dan Vladar on the goaltender's glove side. “A lot of guys stepped up today and I thought we had a great team effort,” Blackwell said. “When you do the little things like that and we get good special teams, we come out with a victory.” Calgary got one back on Kadri's 13th of the season with 4:41 remaining, but Chicago held on in the final minutes. “Today not the best," Kadri said. “Obviously walking out of here, .500 road trip, which is OK, but we felt like it could have been better.” Each team had to deal with an unfortunate deflection in the second period. Calgary took a 2-1 lead at 3:26 when Mangiapane's power-play shot from the side banked in off Murphy's right skate. Mangiapane was credited with his eighth goal of the season. After Kurashev tied it with his eighth, Zaitsev's big slap shot from beyond the right circle went in off the right skate of Flames defenseman Nick DeSimone for a 3-2 lead with 5:11 left in the period. It was Zaitsev's second goal. With nine players on injured reserve, including eight forwards, the Blackhawks went with seven defensemen against the Flames. There has been no word on how long Bedard and Foligno will be out. The 18-year-old Bedard was off to an impressive start in his first season, leading the Blackhawks with 15 goals and 18 assists. “Still just evaluating how he's doing and settling down,” coach Luke Richardson said. “We know there's a jaw fracture, but it's swollen so I think the doctors are just giving it a few days to see how it settles.” Richardson inserted Zach Sanford into the lineup after the veteran forward was claimed off waivers from Arizona on Saturday, but Rem Pitlick had some travel issues after he was acquired in a trade with Pittsburgh.
Brewin Flames
Game # 41 Flames 6 Sens 3 Flames catch fire in 3rd period, burn Senators 6-3 ByAP Updated: Jan 10, 2024, 02:07 am CALGARY, Alberta -- — Yegor Sharangovich and Blake Coleman each scored twice and the Calgary Flames scored four unanswered goals in the third period to defeat the Ottawa Senators 6-3 on Tuesday night. Noah Hanifin had a goal and two assists for Calgary, and rookie Connor Zary also scored. Nazem Kadri added two assists to give him 600 points in the NHL. Jacob Markstrom made 30 saves to improve to 11-11-2. “We did a good job of handling our emotions,” Hanifin said. “Sometimes coming off a road trip like that out East, coming off a couple of tough losses for us, these can be tough games coming back home and I thought we had a really mature game out there and a great third period, obviously.” The Flames come back to win when trailing after two periods for the sixth time, tied with Colorado for the league lead. Jacob Bernard-Docker, Dominik Kubalik and Brady Tkachuk scored for Ottawa, which has dropped the first four on its five-game trip. The Senators have lost nine of their last 10 away from home. “There’s nobody else to look at and there’s nobody else to blame. There’s not one guy better than anybody else on this team. We’re all in this situation,” defenseman Thomas Chabot said. Joonas Korpisalo made 30 saves for the Senators. Down 3-2 entering the third period, it took just 47 seconds for Calgary to tie it, with Hanifin swooping in front from off the point and sending a backhand inside the far post. “It was pretty silky,” Coleman said. “I don’t know if he surprised himself, but the bench got pretty fired up about that.” Hanifin was also involved in the go-ahead goal at 8:57, only in a much different way. When his stick broke on a shot attempt from the blue line, the puck still trickled forward. Coleman corralled it and fired it past Korpisalo. “Nice shot … pass … broken stick. We’ve been working on that one for a while,” Coleman said with a laugh. Hanifin, also smiling, acknowledged it was a fortuitous bounce. “I tried shooting it and the stick just exploded,” he said. “Luckily Colesy was there. He’s hot right now so he’s the guy to be in front of the net that time.” Hanifin has seven goals and 22 points this season. He was plus-five against the Senators, equaling his career high. Sharangovich’s second of the game at 15:45 made it a two-goal cushion and Coleman wrapped up the third-period barrage with his team-leading 17th goal into an empty net at 17:12. Ottawa welcomed back Mathieu Joseph after he missed 10 games with a lower-body injury. He played on the Senators’ top line with Tkachuk and Josh Norris. Exiting the lineup due to illness was D Artem Zub. “I think it can be really hard to stay positive at times, but we’re really left with no other option,” Ottawa defenseman Jeff Chychrun said. “We just need to continue to put the work boots on and find a way out of this hole.”
Brewin Flames
Game # 42 Flames 6 Yotes 2 Yegor Sharangovich has 2nd career hat trick, Flames beat Coyotes 6-2 Updated: Jan 12, 2024, 12:43 am TEMPE, Ariz. -- — Yegor Sharangovich scored two of his three goals in the third period and the Calgary Flames chased Arizona goalie Karel Vejmelka early in a 6-2 victory over the Coyotes on Thursday night. Sharangovich, Mikael Backlund, Rasmus Andersson and Blake Coleman scored in the Flames’ four-goal first period, and Sharangovich finished his second career hat trick in the third. “I think it's chemistry with his two linemates now,” Flames coach Ryan Huska said about Sharangovich, who skates on a line with center Elias Lindholm and Jonathan Huberdeau. “They are starting to make some plays together. We have talked all year about his shot release. I think he is putting himself in positions now where he is available and they are starting to find him.” Jacob Markstrom made 33 saves to help the Flames win for the fifth time in seven games. Coleman also had two assists. Lawson Crouse and Clayton Keller scored for the Coyotes, who trailed 4-1 after the first period. They finished 1-4 on a five-game homestand after winning six of seven. “It worries me,” said Arizona coach Andre Tourigny, whose team was coming off an overtime victory over Boston. "You saw what we can do against Boston. You saw the energy. You saw the desperation. That was a bright spot. Today, that’s why it is disappointing, surprising.” Sharangovich has five goals in his last two games after scoring twice in a 6-3 victory over Ottawa on Tuesday night, when Coleman also had two goals. Backlund skated in his 950th game, second in Calgary franchise history. “Sharky (Sharangovich) was really good,” Coleman said. “That whole line was really solid. They made some big plays, some big goals. Really happy for Sharky to get that hat trick. It’s always a special feeling. The third one was really a big goal for us.” Backlund opened the scoring 20 seconds into the game, when he skated in alone on Vejmelka after an Arizona turnover and scored on a wrist shot from the lower left circle. Sharangovich made it 2-0 six minutes later on a short-handed goal after another turnover, taking a nifty backhand pass from Coleman to score from the right circle. Andersson scored with 7:53 left for a three-goal lead. Nazem Kadri took a shot from the left circle that hit the back boards and ricocheted directly to Andersson, who tucked it in from the right side. Crouse got the Coyotes’ first goal when he picked up a rebound of Nick Bjugstad's shot and had a backhander bounce in off the Flames’ Martin Posipsil with 6:14 left in the period. The Flames regained a three-goal lead 14 seconds later, when Coleman tipped in Chris Tanev’s shot from the right point to make it 4-1. Connor Ingram then replaced Vejmelka, who gave up goals on three of the first four shots he faced and four of 12 overall. Ingram made 18 saves. Keller scored from the left circle on a 3-on-2 break two minutes into the second period to close the deficit to 4-2. Sharangovich scored 58 seconds in the third period and again on a power play seven minutes into the period to make it 6-2. The Flames scored four goals in consecutive periods over two games. They had four in the third period of the 6-3 win over Ottawa, which broke a two-game losing streak. “We had a tough weekend,” Coleman said. “We wanted to bounce back and show we were better than that."

Brewin Flames
Game # 43 Flames 3 VGK 1 Backlund has goal and assist, Flames beat Golden Knights 3-1 for 9th win in 13 games ByAP Updated: Jan 14, 2024, 01:24 am LAS VEGAS -- — Mikael Backlund had a goal and an assist, Jacob Markstrom made 32 saves and the Calgary Flames beat the Vegas Golden Knights 3-1 on Saturday night for their ninth victory in 13 games. Blake Coleman and Nazem Kadri also scored for the Flames, who concluded a 3-0 sweep with their fathers in attendance — the first in Calgary, and the last two on the road for their annual “Dad's Trip.” “Everybody's been energized and it's good time to spend time with dads and brothers and all of that,” said Markstrom, who has now allowed two or fewer goals in six of his last 10 starts. In that span, since Dec. 18, Markstrom ranks fourth in the league with a 2.02 goals-against average among netminders with at least eight starts. “We can’t go .500 anymore,” Markstrom said. “We got to try to make up ground and catch teams. We got to string a few together. This was a good trip and we got to go home and charge the batteries tomorrow and then get back to work.” Logan Thompson made 23 saves while Chandler Stephenson scored for Vegas, snapping an 184:34 drought without a 5-on-5 goal. The defending Stanley Cup champion Golden Knights have lost eight of 11. Down two of their top centers — Jack Eichel and William Karlsson — Vegas’ offense struggled again, having now been limited to 16 goals in its last nine games, scoring a mere 1.77 goals per game. “I think the system we play has been good for us, we just have to execute,” said Jonathan Marchessault, who played his 599th career game. “It’s a privilege to play in the NHL and you got to find a way to do your job. ... You need to take the opportunity in front of you, right now we don’t have enough guys that are doing that.” Calgary struck first during a power play midway through the first period, when Coleman gathered a rebound in front of the net and slipped under Thompson’s pads for his team-high 19th goal of the season and fourth in three games. The Flames extended their lead quickly, this time with Kadri in front of the net with Thompson out of position and unable to move back into the crease with teammate Nic Hague in the way. Kadri punched home the loose puck for his 10th career goal against Vegas. Vegas provided a nice pushback over the first half of the second period, but Markstrom stayed sharp in making several big stops under pressure. The Flames would eventually reward Markstrom with a three-goal lead when Backlund deked around Thompson in the crease before tapping it in for his 10th goal of the season. Andrew Mangiapane got his 200th career point with an assist. “It was obviously a huge win by us,” Backlund said. “We had a really good start again then it got a little tighter throughout the game and wasn’t maybe our best second and third period but we find a way, we grind it, and Marky played so well for us tonight. And so yeah, really big win for us.”

Brewin Flames
Game # 44 Flames 3 Sharangovich scores with seconds left in OT, Flames edge Coyotes 3-2 ByAP Updated: Jan 17, 2024, 01:32 am CALGARY, Alberta -- — Yegor Sharangovich scored a power-play goal in overtime to give the Calgary Flames a 3-2 victory over the Arizona Coyotes on Tuesday night. The Coyotes were penalized for too many men at 3:03 of OT. Sharangovich, who was acquired in last summer’s trade with the New Jersey Devils for Tyler Toffoli, roofed a sharp-angled shot with 17 seconds remaining in extra time. “Heck of a shot. He’s one of those guys that all he needs is one and he made it count,” Flames winger Blake Coleman said. Coleman scored his team-leading 20th goal, and his fifth in four games, and Nazem Kadri had a goal and an assist for the Flames in their fourth straight win. Dan Vladar made 25 saves. Sean Durzi had a goal and assist and Logan Cooley scored for the Coyotes, who led 2-0 early in the third period. Connor Ingram stopped 27 shots in the loss. “We played a really solid game,” Arizona head coach Andre Tourigny said. “If you look at the scoring chances, the pace of the game, possession, it’s a good team on the other side and I think we played one of our most complete games.” The Flames played without winger Jonathan Huberdeau (illness) and also called up goaltender Dustin Wolf from the AHL’s Wranglers after declaring Jacob Markstrom day-to-day with a lower-body injury. Calgary’s power play that ranks among the worst in the NHL and went 0-for-4 in regulation time found success in OT. The Coyotes went 1-for-3. The Coyotes led 2-0 on Cooley’s power-play goal at 6:37 of the third period. Durzi’s shot deflected off the toe of Cooley in the slot. But Calgary pulled even with a pair of goals in a 63-second span. Coleman scored his team-leading 20th and his fifth in four games at 8:54 by redirecting Rasmus Andersson's feed from behind the goal line. Kadri extended his point streak to seven straight games driving the net to knock in a one-handed pass from Martin Pospisil at 9:57. After a scoreless first period, Durzi scored at 8:20 of the second period to give Arizona the early lead. Vladar had an otherwise strong second period. He repelled four shots during Arizona’s power play a minute into the period, stopped Cooley on a breakaway and denied Jason Zucker on a good chance. “I speak for a lot of us when I say we didn’t have it tonight at all energy-wise and it just wasn’t there. Vladdy gave us a chance to hang around,” Coleman said. “We talked about it in-between periods. We couldn’t let this slip away no matter how we felt.”
Brewin Flames
Game # 45 Flames 3 Leafs 4 Auston Matthews has 3 goals and an assist in Maple Leafs' 4-3 victory over Flames ByAP Updated: Jan 19, 2024, 01:49 am CALGARY, Alberta -- — Auston Matthews had a hat trick to push his NHL-leading goals total to 37 and added an assist in the Toronto Maple Leafs' 4-3 comeback victory over the Calgary Flames on Thursday night. Mitch Marner also scored and Martin Jones made 24 saves to help Toronto end a four-game skid and improve to 22-13-8. William Nylander and Pontus Holmberg each had two assists. “I think it just gives us confidence to have that lead, hang onto it,” Matthews said. “Lots of really good things in the third period. I don’t think we sat back too much. I thought we tried to drive play on the other half of the ice as much as possible.” Yegor Sharangovich, former Toronto forward Nazem Kadri and Andrew Mangiapane scored for Calgary, and Dan Vladar stopped 29 shots. The Flames had won a season-high four games in a row. “We were turning the puck over too much in the neutral zone. Making it hard on ourselves and feeding them,” Calgary captain Mikael Backlund said. “They’re a really highly skilled team, and if you feed them, they’re going to eventually capitalize and that’s what they did.” Late in the first period, Backlund rang a shot off the goalpost on a breakaway that would have given the Flames a 3-0 lead. Ninety seconds later, Matthews pounced on a mishandled puck inside the blue line by Flames defenseman Nick DeSimone and ripped a shot into the top corner. The Leafs carried that momentum into the second period by tying it at 4:08 when Matthews converted Nylander’s setup during a delayed penalty. After Toronto surged in front at 7:44 with Marner’s 19th goal on a 4-on-3 power play, Matthews completed the hat trick with 6:21 left in the period. Vladar gloved a shot from Matthew Knies but couldn’t secure it before Matthews outmuscled DeSimone in the slot and buried a backhander. “It’s pretty impressive,” Jones said. “It always feels like even when we’re down two in the first we’re never really out of a game because we have those weapons that can dig us out of those holes.”
Brewin Flames
Game # 46 Flames 1 EDM 3 Oilers beat Flames 3-1 for Canadian-record 13th straight victory ByAP Updated: Jan 21, 2024, 02:47 am CALGARY, Alberta -- — Sam Gagner broke a tie with a fluke goal early in the third period and the Edmonton Oilers beat the Calgary Flames 3-1 on Saturday night to break Montreal's record for the longest winning streak by a Canadian team at 13. From below the goal line near the corner, Gagner attempted to center to Dylan Holloway in the slot, but it deflected off Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson’s skate, ended up on the top of goalie Dan Vladar’s trapper and fluttered into the net. Ryan McLeod and Zach Hyman — into an empty net — also scored and Stuart Skinner made 26 saves to help Edmonton break the tie with the 1967-68 Canadiens for the Canadian mark. Pittsburgh set the NHL mark of 17 in 1992-93. “Any time you can be the only team to do anything that’s positive, that’s always exciting. Good for our group,” said captain Connor McDavid, whose points streak ended at 12 games. “It’s not something we were paying too close attention to but obviously we want to keep going.” The Oilers improved to 26-15-1, going 23-6-0 since Kris Knoblauch took over as coach. “When we did the 10-game streak, we eclipsed the Oilers’ ’80s teams, now it’s the old Montreal team,” said Hyman, who has 28 goals. ”When you’re in the moment you just go out there and play, but I’m sure it’ll be something cool to look back on.” The Oilers have won nine straight on the road to break the franchise record set in 1986-87, and Skinner won his 10th straight to tie Grant Fuhr’s 1985-86 team mark. “Just try to keep on playing the game and keep on winning games,” said Skinner, 17-2-0 in his last 19 starts. “We’re still here to battle and grind and make our way up the leaderboard.” MacKenzie Weegar scored for Calgary and Vladar stopped 29 shots. The Flames have lost two straight after winning four in a row. “I thought there would have been a little bit more pride there from us,” Weegar said. “It’s a big game, they’re coming into our territory, our city, I thought we would have a little bit more juice there.” McLeod opened the scoring with late in the first, getting in alone and neatly tucking a shot inside the near goalpost as he cut across the top of the crease. Weegar tied it early in the second. Blake Coleman put a saucer pass Weegar's stick and he steered it inside the goalpost. “We got outcompeted, awareness was limited. There wasn’t much urgency in that first period,” Weegar said. “Vladdy stood on his head. … Battle of Alberta, there wasn’t much of a battle tonight from us.” In the first game between the provincial rivals since the Heritage Classic in Edmonton, both teams wore their same retro look from the outdoor game.

Brewin Flames
Game # 47 Brandon Saad scores twice as Blues beat Flames 4-3 ByAP Updated: Jan 24, 2024, 01:43 am CALGARY, Alberta -- — Brandon Saad’s second goal of the night with 48 seconds left in the third period was the winner as the St. Louis Blues rallied to beat the Calgary Flames 4-3 on Tuesday night. “I felt good,” said Saad, who led the visitors with five shots. “You want to see some more of those go in but any time you see them go in they feel good. Happy to contribute tonight.” Brayden Schenn and Jordan Kyrou also scored for St. Louis and Jordan Binnington made 32 saves. MacKenzie Weegar, Noah Hanifin and Yegor Sharangovich provided the offense for Calgary, which has lost three in a row. Jacob Markstrom, returning from a three-game absence due to a lower-body injury, made 22 saves. Down 3-1 late in the second, St. Louis started its comeback with a short-handed goal. When Weegar mishandled the puck at the St. Louis blue line, Schenn pounced on it and raced away on a breakaway, burying his 11th goal of the season past Markstrom. The Blues’ 11th short-handed goal moves them into a tie for the league lead with the Dallas Stars. Kyrou tied it 3-3 at 6:56 of the third when he skated uncontested into the slot off the side boards and fired his 13th goal just inside the goalpost. On the winning goal, Saad got the puck inside his own blue line, carried it through the neutral zone and sent a 50-foot wrist shot that rattled in off the goalpost on Markstrom’s glove side. “I was just trying to move him side to side and shoot through a screen and it found a way in for me,” said Saad, who has 13 goals on the season. Markstrom said he still should have had it, despite the puck taking a bad bounce. “That’s tough. Obviously with the clock and the time left and tie game, it’s a crazy skip off the ice and post and in. I don’t know. Obviously, I need to stop that one,” said Markstrom. “I thought it was fine, I thought it was just gonna hit the pad.” Having already eclipsed his career high of eight, Weegar’s 11 goals is tied for third for defensemen in the league behind Rasmus Dahlin (13) and Quinn Hughes (12). While the Blues are 18-2-0 when scoring first, their .900 winning percentage leading the NHL, it’s the opposite when they don’t score first. But Tuesday’s win improves their record when trailing first to 5-18-2. The Blues are three points back of Nashville for the second wild-card berth with two games in hand. “These are big wins, four-point games, teams you need to beat in order to climb the standings,” said Schenn. “Gutsy comeback win. It was nice that it was regulation as well.”

Brewin Flames
Game # 48 Flames 2 CBJ 5 Texier gets 1st short-handed goal of season for Blue Jackets in 5-2 win over slumping Flames Updated: Jan 26, 2024, 02:14 am CALGARY, Alberta -- — Alexandre Texier scored Columbus' first short-handed goal this season and the Blue Jackets beat the skidding Calgary Flames 5-2 on Thursday night. Yegor Chinakhov, Damon Severson, Dmitri Voronkov and Adam Fantilli, into an empty net, also scored for Columbus (15-23-9). The Blue Jackets improved to 4-2-2 in their last eight road games. “Not every night’s going to be pretty, not every play is going to be perfect, and we get that,” Severson said. “I felt we were engaged for the most part and we didn’t sit back.” MacKenzie Weegar and Connor Zary each had a goal for the Flames (21-22-5), who have lost four straight — all at home. “It’s unacceptable. Four straight losses at home when you’re trying to make the playoffs,” defenseman Chris Tanev said. Daniil Tarasov made 28 saves in the win. Jacob Markstrom stopped 27 shots for Calgary. “Guys played really good in the second. This gave us the chance to win in the third period,” Tarasov said. With the score tied 2-all in the second, Calgary got the game’s first power play when Severson was whistled for high-sticking at 5:21. But the Flames’ 30th-ranked power play failed to take advantage, and the Blue Jackets scored instead. They were the only NHL team without a short-handed goal this season. “Our penalty kill is more dangerous than our power play right now, and that’s not a good thing,” Calgary coach Ryan Huska said. Texier burst down right wing with the puck on a 2-on-1, and his initial shot hit the post. But as Markstrom looked over his right shoulder for the rebound, the puck came back out over his left shoulder and right to Texier, who buried his seventh goal of the season. “It doesn’t happen really often, those bounces, but when you get the chance you have to put it in,” Texier said. Jonathan Huberdeau was given a boarding major and game misconduct at 11:28 of the third when he drilled Jack Roslovic headfirst into the boards, bloodying his face. Columbus took advantage of the extended 5-on-4 with Voronkov’s goal at 13:43 that made it 4-2. “We’re missing a little bit of energy I find at times in games,” Flames captain Mikael Backlund said. “We’ve got to play with a lot of energy and pace and when we don’t, that’s when teams take advantage of us.” KYLINGTON RETURNS After missing more than a season and a half on a mental health leave, Flames defenseman Oliver Kylington played his first NHL game since May 26, 2022. The crowd gave him a standing ovation when he was introduced in the starting lineup. “It’s touching, for sure. It really is,” the 26-year-old Swede said. “This was nothing I could ever expect. When you see people writing to you, people cheering for you, applauding you, it really touches you in a way I wasn’t expecting. So it means a lot.” Weegar has goals in three straight games for the first time in his career. ... Calgary lost LW A.J. Greer halfway through the second period when he injured his left leg. Greer collapsed to the ice after hitting the boards, clutching at his leg. He had to be helped off the ice.
Brewin Flames
Game # 49 Flames 1 Hawks 0 Lindholm and Markstrom lead Flames over punchless Blackhawks 1-0 to halt skid Updated: Jan 28, 2024, 02:29 am CALGARY, Alberta -- — Elias Lindholm scored a power-play goal late in the second period and Jacob Markstrom made 32 saves as the Calgary Flames snapped a four-game losing streak with a 1-0 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday night. The last-place Blackhawks have been shut out in two consecutive games, three of their last four and four of the past six. Minus injured rookie star Connor Bedard, they've lost 10 straight on the road and are winless in their last 20 away from home (0-19-1). The franchise record is 22 games (0-20-2) set in 1950-51. “Obviously it’s really frustrating,” said Chicago defenseman Kevin Korchinski. “We’ve got to bear down and maybe not put it into words. Let our actions do the talking.” Petr Mrazek had 30 stops for Chicago. “We’ve had some games where we’ve had maybe more chances and more shots than the other team but maybe not the quality, but tonight I think we had the quality as well,” said Chicago coach Luke Richardson. “I don’t know if I’ve ever seen six breakaways in a game and zero on the score clock.” It was the 20th career shutout and second this season for Markstrom, who improved to 14-13-2 as Calgary finished a 2-4-0 homestand. “Obviously you want to put on a better performance for your goalie, but he was dialed in tonight and he played an outstanding game,” said Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson. “Sometimes you need your goalie to steal a game and today was a perfect example of that.” Calgary broke through when its 30th-ranked power play cashed in at 15:55 of the second. Lindholm set up Yegor Sharangovich in front, whose one-timer was blocked by defenseman Jarred Tinordi. But the puck caromed right to Lindholm at the side of an open net and he fired it in for his ninth goal of the season with Mrazek trapped out of position. That ended a 15-game goal drought for Lindholm, who was selected by the NHL as Calgary’s representative for the upcoming All-Star Game. It was just his second goal in the last 25 games. “It’s been a while, I’ve had a lot of chances, just haven’t been able to put them in. So it’s always nice to score again and also to help the team win,” Lindholm said. Two years removed from scoring 42 goals, Lindholm — who is a pending unrestricted free agent — has just nine goals through 49 games. Chicago had a wide edge in the quality of chances, with Markstrom turning aside five breakaways in the first 40 minutes. “It’s obviously really frustrating when you do get looks and the puck’s not going in,” said Chicago forward Taylor Raddysh. “At the end of the day you have to bear down on a couple of them. As a whole group we need to find that extra little jump or step to be able to bang one home and get one by the goalie.” The Flames announced left wing A.J. Greer will be out eight weeks with a broken foot sustained in Thursday night’s loss to Columbus.

Brewin Flames
Game # 50 Flames 4 Bos 1 Andrei Kuzmenko scores in his Calgary debut as the Flames beat the listless Bruins 4-1 Andrei Kuzmenko puts in his first goal with the Flames after being part of the Elias Lindholm trade package. ByAP Updated: Feb 6, 2024, 11:03 pm BOSTON -- — Andrei Kuzmenko scored in his Calgary debut, Nazem Kadri had three assists and the Flames beat the Boston Bruins 4-1 on Tuesday night. Jonathan Huberdeau had a goal and two assists and Connor Zary also scored for the Flames, who held Atlantic Division- and Eastern Conference-leading Boston to five shots in the second period in a listless return from the All-Star break for the Bruins. “One of our best of the year, obviously against a great team in a tough building," Kadri said. “I’m very proud of how we rallied and how we responded after some adversity and came up with a big two points.” Jacob Markstrom stopped 21 shots for Calgary. Boston native Noah Hanifin added a late goal for the Flames. Pavel Zacha scored on a power play early in the third period for the Bruins, who opened a seven-game homestand with a flat performance. “Physical. Mental. Both," Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy said when asked about Boston's many mistakes. ”We just weren’t good enough tonight. Obviously practice didn’t translate and they outplayed us." David Pastrnak assisted on Zacha’s goal, and Jeremy Swayman finished with 25 saves for Boston. “Every single night in this league can be a humbling experience, so I don’t think I’m going to look too far into it to be honest,” McAvoy said. “We’re the first place team in our conference and we’re going to get everyone’s best, even more so than we did before. So this is good for us — to know what to expect from everybody.” Kuzmenko joined the Flames less than a week earlier, arriving in a package deal from Vancouver in exchange for Elias Lindholm. It didn't take Kuzmenko long make an impact. He put the Flames up 1-0 on a power-play goal 4:01 into the game on a wrist shot off a centering pass from Huberdeau. The goal came just 31 seconds after Brandon Carlo was called for holding Kadri, who also picked up an assist on the play. Kadri added another assist nine minutes later after forcing a Bruins turnover deep in their own zone and taking it the other way, feeding a quick pass to Zara as he streaked in on Swayman and beat him with a backhand shot. “This was one of our better games this year,” Calgary coach Ryan Huska said. “I think it was a really good team game where the guys came to play the right way.” The Flames played the final 44 minutes down a forward after second-line winger Martin Pospisil leveled Boston captain Brad Marchand during a scrum in front of Calgary’s net with four minutes left in the opening period. Marchand got a two-minute minor for slashing, while Pospisil received a five-minute major and game misconduct for cross-checking. Although Boston entered the second period with a full minute left on the major penalty to Pospisil, Calgary dominated the period and outshot Boston 9-5. Boston didn’t get another power-play opportunity until early in the third, when Braydon Pachal went off for hooking at 2:48 and MacKenzie Weegar received a double-minor for high-sticking Marchand in the Flames’ zone less than a minute later. Boston capitalized on the 5-on-3 when Pavel Zacha scored on a crossing pass from Pastrnak with 15:46 remaining, cutting the margin to 2-1. Huberdeau, who was playing in his 799th career game, pushed the lead back to two goals a couple minutes later when he forced a turnover and fired a quick wrist shot past Swayman.
Brewin Flames
Game # 51 Markstrom makes 37 saves as Flames down Devils 5-3 for their third straight victory ByAP Updated: Feb 8, 2024, 11:09 pm NEWARK, N.J. -- — Jacob Markstrom made 37 saves, Connor Zary and Andrew Mangiapane each had a goal and an assist and the Calgary Flames defeated the New Jersey Devils 5-3 on Thursday night for their third straight win. Mikael Backlund, Kevin Rooney and Andrei Kuzmenko also scored for Calgary, which was coming off a 4-1 win at Boston on Tuesday to start a four-game trip that includes facing the three New York/New Jersey-area teams. Defenseman Noah Hanifan had two assists for the Flames, whose winning streak comes after a four-game skid. Markstrom improved to 16-13-2. “This is the best since I’ve been around him that I’ve seen him play," Flames first-year coach Ryan Huska said of his veteran goaltender. ”He's been giving us a chance to win every night." Ondrej Palat scored twice, Nico Hischier also had a goal and Jesper Bratt had three assists for New Jersey, which was coming off a 5-3 win at home over Colorado on Tuesday. “We had a good first, the second period was bad and in the third, we were chasing. It’s frustrating," Palat said. “We’re looking for consistency.” Palat opened the scoring at 15:39 of the first, completing a 2-on-1 break with Bratt. Hischier also assisted. Backlund, the Flames' captain, then tied it with his 11th goal at 18:10 of the first. Rookie forward Zary put Calgary ahead at 3:53 of the second, nudging a loose puck in the crease past Vitek Vanecek. The goal was the 12th in 41 games for the 22-year-old Zary, a first-round pick by the Flames in 2020. “It was nice to get on the scoreboard and help out,” Zary said. ”It’s been awesome so far to be able to come in here and play in the NHL and try and be an everyday player and establish myself." Rooney made it 3-1 at 2:55 of the third with his first of the season. Hischier narrowed the deficit to one goal with a short-handed breakaway score at 4:02 of the third, his 14th goal of the season. “We had our chances, but we didn’t bear down," Hischier said. ”These things happen. There’s still a lot of hockey left.” Kuzmenko restored the Flames’ two-goal lead at 9:56 of the third with his 10th goal, and second in two games since joining Calgary in a trade from Vancouver. Palat scored his second of the game and eighth of the season at 13:48 of the third, and Mangiapane added an empty-net goal to cap the scoring at 18:26. ”In the second period, we just came out like a pack of hyenas," Flames forward Jonathan Huberdeau said. "That's the kind of game we have to play, and I think that’s when we are tough to play against." The Devils fell to 25-21-3, five points out of a wild-card playoff spot. “When tough goals go in, you get a little deflated," Devils coach Lindy Ruff said. "You have to pick yourself back up. You’re either going to get your bounces or be responsible for giving up bounces.”
Brewin Flames
Game # 52 Weegar nets first career hat trick, Flames top Islanders 5-2 ByAP Updated: Feb 10, 2024, 04:51 pm NEW YORK -- — MacKenzie Weegar recorded his first career hat trick and led the Calgary Flames to a 5-2 win against the New York Islanders on Saturday. Jonathan Huberdeau and Blake Coleman also scored to help Calgary extend its season-high winning streak to four games. Jacob Markstrom finished with 35 saves and also registered an assist in the third game of a four-game road trip to begin the second half of the season following the NHL All-Star break. “Until the last seven or eight minutes of the third period, it was a pretty complete game for us again,” Flames coach Ryan Huska said. “We had all sorts of contributions from different people so that was something that was important too. … This is a tough team, if you get behind on them, they make it really hard on you to be able to get back in games, so it was nice to be able to score first.” Semyon Varlamov made 19 saves in his 600th NHL appearance but the Islanders brief two-game winning streak was snapped. Brock Nelson and Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored New York. Weegar opened the scoring with a soft wrist shot from the right faceoff circle that sailed past the blocker of Varlamov at 3:47 of the first period. The 30-year-old defenseman scored his second of the night to give Calgary a 3-0 lead at 15:16 of the second period. The Islanders lost track of Weegar and he blasted an uncontested one-timer from the high slot. Jakob Pelletier and Walker Duehr assisted. Nelson pulled the Islanders to within two goals early in the third period. Matt Martin screened the Flames goaltender and Nelson’s wrist shot from just inside the blueline spoiled Markstrom’s shutout bid. “We found ourselves in a hole and a little too late in the third when we started to find it and get a lot more zone time and some chances,” Nelson said. “Kind of a weird one early, didn't feel like we gave up a ton but we found ourselves own a few.” Huberdeau deposited a rebound and scored a power-play goal midway through the second period to give Calgary a 2-0 edge at the time. Yegor Sharangovich’s one-time blast from the top of the right faceoff circle created a juicy rebound that Huberdeau cashed in on. “We didn’t panic, we stuck with our game plan,” Huberdeau said. “Another game, Markstrom has been tremendous for us. It’s easier to play in front of a goalie that is making a lot of key saves. Everybody worked, everybody was going again, it’s good to see.” Coleman added an empty-net goal at 15:59 of the third period, which extended the Flames lead to 4-1. Pageau scored his seventh of the season at 17:28 of the third period. Weegar closed out the scoring and completed the hat trick with an empty-net goal in the final minute of regulation. “I never would have thought I would have a hat trick in the NHL,” Weegar said. “Credit to my teammates of course. We have just been playing great hockey. … It was a great night from everybody.”
