    Hello:

I will probably stick with usual fermented grape juice but might channel AV with  a martini.

This is a match between two teams ironing out lineups, particularly the Pens on defense.  That has been a question for them going into the season.  If we do well on scoring--I might eat words and say AV and the gang have it right.

I respect Pitt and think Rutherford is a wily GM.  That said, I see us and our next opponent, Buffalo, as teams on the way up.  Malkin, Crosby, and company may be trending down.  I think NJ and NYR will be our archenemies in a year or two.

Actually, Carolina may be another Beast in the East.  The NY area team have the longer history.

  3. Interesting game.  I'm not sure if reflects a really balanced scoring attack or bad Pitt D.  Maybe both.  I guess Carter Hart is human but that bad clear will teach him something. It's fair to say we have no weak lines.  Laughton and Raffl will work hard and control play.  Hayes is all over.  I wonder what happens with Ghost upon return?

Well, this Friday should be a good match-up.

  4. Greetings:

I have seen odds all over the map, but it looks like we are a light favorite:

    https://pickdawgz.com/nhl-picks/2021-01-13/pittsburgh-penguins-at-philadelphia-flyers-1-13-21-nhl-picks-and-prediction

Tristan Jarry is in net for the Pens versus Hartsy.  We were a great team at WFC last year; PIT was poor on the road.  But when these teams meet, and with Crosby's track record against us, odds may not matter much.  On face, our depth should be decisive.  But PIT took two from us last year, even though one of those was in OT:

Both teams will want to to open the season on a high note.  It should be good.

Good find H58. But, I don't concur with this Washington writer's conclusion.

This Flyers team is a very, very, good Team.

As a writer from afar, what he doesn't see is the significant improvements -

    1) the addition of Lindblom and Patrick. This is not to be minimized. It's significant.

    2) Improvement/growth from last season - 8 young players already on roster who are far from their peak - this is a great point not to be overlooked -

Fletcher said he and his staff had counted "eight players on the NHL roster that haven't come close to hitting their peak and to having their career seasons." "That's the exciting thing," Fletcher said. "That's our growth."

    Hmm - 8 roster players:

    1) Myers
    2) Sanheim
    3) Farabee
    4) Konecny
    5) Lindblom
    6) Patrick
    7) Aube-Kubel
    8] Hart

    3) This team will score goals. Our Flyers last season were 7th in the 31-team NHL in 'goals scored'. They played 1 and 2 games less than the two teams ahead of them, and could easily have been 5th in the League. As Fletcher said, don't be fooled by the 13 game small sample size of the bubble playoffs.

    4) Infusion of youth - an open 3RW spot -

    -  Fletcher said: “We’re comfortable with our group. We like our team. We already have a lot of players signed and a lot of kids who we feel can push for ice time and an opportunity.

    - Sandin, Allison, Laczynski - - one could make it -

Question: Do you foresee any of your older first-year pros coming in this season -- Linus Sandin, Wade Allison, and Tanner Laczynski specifically -- to compete for a NHL job this upcoming season? All three are physically mature and 23- or 24-years old.

[AGM] Brent Flahr: First of all, Laczynski and Allison like you said, and Sandin, they’re older players. They’re physically more mature than typically players that are coming out of junior that are 19, 20 years old. Their mindset coming to camp is to make the team. - - - In reality I would say, I would assume that each of them are going to play games this year. Hopefully one of them grabs it and makes the best of their opportunity.

    5) Goaltender Carter Hart, age 22, taking the next step:

Asked if he had set any personal goals, Hart said he wants to “be the best I can be. I want to be able to give our team a chance to win every night. I don’t want to just be another NHL player; I want to be the best and I want to be the best NHL goaltender. That is something that I strive for every day.

IMO, this is a very, very, good team - - a SC contender.

    Dear Zzeke:

A year from now, we should be elite--top five to eight teams--if players develop as predicted.  This year may be a transition.  If indeed Giroux is moved off the top line, that is recognition of changing the guard.  This year, I am not so sure.  The last 10-20 games may show what the newbies bring.  If it happens sooner than later, I will be happier than you know what.  And being wrong would make me happy.   I hope to see another Cup before kicking up daisies.

    Peace,

    Howie

  6. Greetings:

Here is an interesting take on the Flyers for '21.  I concur with their conclusion.

    https://www.nbcsports.com/washington/capitals/east-division-previews-how-far-can-carter-hart-take-flyers

The Flyers who ended 9-1 and swept the round robin had a tough time with a Montreal team that wouldn't have made the playoffs under the regular format, and going seven games against the Islanders wasn't inspiring.  Will our newbies make a difference?  Maybe. But we don't have the gamechangers found on other squads.

    Best,

         Giroux - Couturier - Laine
     Laughton - Hayes -  Farabee
     Lindblom - Patrick - Konecny
           Morin -  Raffle -  N.AK

This Morin gambit is interesting and I am glad the kid is being a chance to prove himself.  This is his last chance to make it in the NHL given the depth we have at D.  The good thing is we see this experiment play out in real time...a short camp and no preseason games.

Three of our first rounders of the last eight (?) years are big question marks.  Morin, Rubstov, and Patrick.  I suspect this will be make-or-break for the trio.

hose Flyers Board members who are in the US outside the Philadelphia TV coverage area, how do you see TV Flyers games? Is there an NHL TV package to subscribe to? Streaming? Pirating?

    Happy New Year:

I've done the NHL Center Ice Package through Comcast.  It is $149 for the season (if memory serves).  Most of the time I get the home feed but, sometimes it is a feed from another source such as CNBC or Rogers.  I've had it for 6-7 years and think it is OK if you accept the occasional away feed and the fact that not all broadcasts are in HD (I believe).

  9. Reflecting on this new schedule reminds me of the first three years after the 2004-05 strike.  If you recall, the league scheduled a very intensive intra-division gig ( I think it was eight games in your division) with very few outside. In fact, I think there were virtually no out-of-conference games and they weren't even home-and-home.  The idea at the time was to rekindle an almost "Original Six" degree of competition.  If memory serves, people were very happy to see that model go.

Familiarity may breed some contempt.  We may get bored seeing these teams so often.  This is a temporary adjustment that is necessitated by a pandemic.  But we may get sick of seeing the same players along the way.

I guess the one interesting thing to watch for is "ownership."  Will some teams "own" others?  I remember when we could never win in Columbus.  Or when Antero Nittymaki beat up on Atlanta (I think).  We've done well in Pitt some years but floundered there in others.  We'll see.  The newbies in the division like Buffalo might provide some surprises.

Thx. This is a place that does not recklessly hammer their own.

    Dear Zzeke:

You nailed a prime attribute of the board, maybe its essence.  Many of us are refugees from other sites that tolerated nastiness and personal putdowns. Not here.

    Welcome aboard.

    Sir Zzeke:

A few weeks ago I posted that Morin on the D coupled with Fedetov in goal would be an interesting Twin Tower that could suit up for the Eagles.  Morin has always intrigued us.  I hope for his sake and ours that he develops and plays.  He has persevered and deserves a shot.

Meanwhile, best wishes for the holidays and I look forward to a Morin-style body blow on 2020.

    Morin (LD)

    Dear Zzeke:

My only question/comment on Morin would be playing time.  Does he help his cause on a taxi squad that travels with the team but plays very little?  I know he isn't waiver exempt anymore but he might not get taken given his health issues.  I hope the kid succeeds and grows with us or elsewhere.  His luck is awful.

  13. The more I read, the less likely we acquire Laine.  This will be a semi-asterisked season that is unlikely to see many prospects make the team directly from what little camp-time they get.  I don't think G or JVR move without an economic recovery that brings a cap increase (probably two years out).  History casts a long shadow.  Homer graced us with two biggies that may not reap much as we go further into the decade.

Our D has a lot of upside.  What we do with a potentially ineffective Ghost is probably the biggest issue other than salary cap problems.

The other issue is depth in goal if either Moose or Hart goes down.  That might require a short-term fix--Lyon might be a spot starter but not sure of more.

  14. I don't see Fletcher going for Laine unless there is some kind of salary dump.  At this stage, the only thing that comes to mind is the need to establish lines and D-pairings quickly.  There isn't much time for experimentation.  I also wonder if the trade deadline will mean that much--not a lot of time to integrate a newcomer.
