  1. Quick Take:

    1. Samsonov > Hart!

    2. The "great out of the gate" followed by lackluster second and third periods raises questions about conditioning and pacing.

    3.  Our D from within 20 feet is unsound.

You'd reckon on a goal from Ovie.  But one from a guy who hasn't scored in (if I heard right) 150 games...

Agreed with others that Hartnell is not a great add.  Thank G_d for Taryn.

  2. Greetings:

We come into the game as favorites (a bit surprising):

    It is Hart vs. Vanacek.

We are catching the Caps at the end of a five-game away stretch.  Maybe that compensates for our deflating loss on Saturday.

  3. This was not one of Moose's finest hours,  but the D had some blame and our special teams are dragging down good 5 x 5 work.

Fletcher may have some moves to make on the defensive front. Our assistant coaching will need the microscope if the PP/PK continues as is.

Moose will have an occasional bad game, like any other goalie, but I worry we can't make him the de facto starter without age catching up.

  4. Greetings:

Despite Tuesday's shellacking, odds for the game are pretty much even:

    The teams are close statistically:

The big question may be bounce back--how does the O and B respond to Tuesday's performance?

The last time Giroux even had a hat trick was April 2018.

The only hat trick Jake has ever had was February 2013.

Giroux's last hat trick vs a top opponent was vs Pittsburgh in 2012.

Let that sink in a minute.

Coots is the only star on this team who show up nightly from the forwards.

Giroux's contract expires next year, which will be a real turning point for the franchise.  He will not be on his current salary via a re-signing.  He may not even stay here.  Jake is here through '23-'24 and I don't think he is either expansion draft material or trade bait.  So--I might say the burden to the team of those two anchors begins to diminish next year. That is little solace but the "core" issue begins to lessen a bit.  Jake's contract....yikes.

  6. Perhaps.  From my vantage, we have "1-A" Centers....they are not gamebreakers. Coots is a superb 2-way. Hayes is similar.  I don't think we have a Clarke or Espo or Barzal.  Farabee may be a developing game-changer.  My gut says we need a "team effort" centered on forecheck, D, and G.  We might overpower some teams but that isn't going to happen every day.

  7. I do not see AV as the problem.  He is an activist and sincerely committed to holding people accountable.

This is a strange season and COVID may be presenting operational "noise" that gets in the way of player development. That said, it impacts all teams.

Last year's performance against MTL + NYI coupled with our Bruins experience this year--and PIT last night, tells me we have a tough time against top-tier forward talent.  These quick scores that leave our goalies exposed to high chance shots are troublesome.

I am also a bit worried about Hart.  He may be playing different caliber opposition.  That said, the numbers difference with Moose raises some tough questions.

We hoped for a porch-clearer with Morin. That isn't happening.  Friedman didn't have enough snarl.  Sanheim, Myers...TBD.  Braun may be good at stretches.  It is hard for me to figure this out.

  8. If you go back a few years, what comes to mind?  I'd reckon a common belief that we would have one of the best defenses in the league.  There was concern our core wasn't what it used to be on the forward side, but the D would be mobile and among the best in the league given our drafts.  Well, here we are and our D is mediocre with a 3.0 GAA:

    https://www.espn.com/nhl/team/_/name/phi/philadelphia-flyers

Yes folks, we are 23rd in defense:

    https://sportsjaw.com/nhl/picks/1713570/philadelphia-flyers-vs-pittsburgh-penguins-prediction-2021-03-04/

Granted, defense is also a team gig, not simply the role of the D, but we have to wonder if our prospects will pan out as planned? Niskanen's departure is part of the problem, but I have to wonder about Myers and company.  Are they going to be as good as we thought?

Our forwards are a mixed bag.  We have to be happy with JF, and Giroux is a playmaker of value.  That said, there are few players on this squad we should consider untouchable.

  9. Keith Jones noted that Krueger made no effort to pull the goalie and endeavor to score in the last few minutes.  He thought it was a bad decision and white flag waving.

This franchise is going through its walk in the desert.  They've had some good picks.  Nothing gels.

If there's a blow-up, would you want a Dahlin or Ristolainen?  Maybe?  Would a Claude Julien or other 1-A coach want to right the ship?  That might be the big Q?  I feel sorry for the fans, who've been devoted through a bankruptcy and had a tradition of good play for many years. They deserve better.  And I have to wonder if Bettman and the general staff of the league will eventually pull strings for management improvements, behind the scenes?

  10. Greetings:

We were the underdogs until about 2 this afternoon:  Crosby's absence makes us a mild favorite:

    https://www.vegasinsider.com/nhl/odds/las-vegas/line-movement/flyers-@-penguins.cfm/date/03-2-21

Over the last 10 games, we have a better record but the teams seem equal statistically:

    https://www.oddsshark.com/nhl/philadelphia-pittsburgh-odds-march-2-2021-1366701

It looks like Hart versus Jarry.  Interestingly, neither has a save percentage over .900.

    LGF!

  11. Well, we beat a squad that doesn't have much going for it.  It probably amped Hart's psyche.  And it was good to see some creative offense.  But the coming week is a sort of min-playoff away against an archrival.  That may be a real test.

I was glad to see Ghost with pep in the step.  If he's on his game, Provo and Ghost make an interesting duo.

  12. This was a good effort against against a cellar-dweller.  Moose is a Sabre Killer.  Agreed with FD that the Sabres may want Krueger fired, but as noted by our broadcast team, 14 of the squad have expiring contracts, and another five are RFA's.  Maybe they don't feel connected because in three months, they won't be.  I have never heard of so many members of a team being UFA's.

This is a killer stretch for the team--six games in nine days.  I think they said we will have 40 in the remaining 73 days of the season, with 10 back-to-backs.  Depth will matter more than ever.

Hart has to respond to the challenge.  His numbers aren't very inspiring.  He needs to find his mojo.

    So, onward and upward.

f we weren’t in a pandemic, I would have been at both games this weekend.

Yes, it has been disruptive to say the least.  Thankfully, you are here to tell the tale.  Take heart, J & J got emergency approval today--that should ramp up vaccinations.

Well, maybe Eichel can't be the next to bag three against us.

  14. Greetings:

We are installed as mild favorites for the matchup:

    https://www.docsports.com/free-picks/nhl-hockey/2021/philadelphia-flyers-vs-buffalo-sabres-prediction-2-27-2021-nhl-pick-tips-and-odds.html

It looks like Hart versus Ullmark between the pipes.  We are 1-1 this year, with one shutout on side and blowout 6-1 against us.

Historically, we have done very well against the Sabres, in both the regular season and playoffs, though performance in Buffalo is about .500.

    https://buffalohockeycentral.com/sabres-vs-flyers-all-time/

Let's hope we shut down their top guns.  We won't win many games giving up hat tricks.

  15. One night it's Pastrnak, the next it's Kreider.  Our D is allowing high-skill forwards to operate with impunity around the net.  I am glad we won, but this was ugly.  Moose is a gamer.  He came up with some biggies to seal the deal.

Yes, I think we miss Niskanen.  Who is going to rise to the occasion to replace him? Or do we go to the outside to stabilize things?

  16. Greetings:

We are a mild favorite.  The teams are each other's flip side.  The Rags are 7th in D, and 25th in O--We are 7th in offense and 27th in D.

    https://sportsjaw.com/nhl/picks/1713222/new-york-rangers-vs-philadelphia-flyers-prediction-2021-02-24/

I will be late from work and may miss a chunk.  Then again, after last Sunday's play with a chunk of the squad missing, I may not be missing much.

    LGF,

    Howie
