  1. Yeah, the stench is too much to cover up.  Apparently, Keith Jones' remarks after the last game were hard to swallow for some of the corporate types, but earned kudos from outsiders.

I suspect Fletcher can't admit publicly that it's rebuild time.  But everyone knows it:

    https://www.phillyvoice.com/flyers-trade-deadline-draft-picks-news-analysis-scott-laughton-contract-michael-raffl-rebuild-chuck-fletcher/

Voracek, Giroux...it doesn't matter.  Say auf wiedersehen and get picks or cap space and move on.

My new watch gig:  I sit through the first period.  If they aren't down by more than 2, I will continue.  If down by 2+, I exercise and tune in for the third.   Even that is too much to bear these days.  I guess Taryn makes it a bit easier.

Meanwhile, next year become a real pivot before our eyes.  For the first time in ages, we may see a wholesale roster change ala 2008. Good.  This group ain't cutting the mustard.

they blowed this up when they should have blowed this up they would be a serious contender with a young exciting team to watch. Hextall was a turd of a GM and a horrible assayer of talent and what it takes to win in the playoffs. I hope he does the same to the Pens.

I've often felt the departure of Chris Pryor may have been as important as that of his boss.  Now they are a tandem in Pitt.

Drafting aside, we haven't made the "fill-in" trades that connect the dots.  Niskanen may have been a recent exception.  At least CF acknowledged his error with Gus.  The draft is the key to success in a cap challenged world.  We are seeing up close and personal what a lock-in to high salary and long-term can mean on the downside.  I am glad CF adopted Doug Wilson's old philosophy of no contracts longer than five years with Laughton's re-up.

The bookies don't give the O and B much of a chance:

Winning or losing the remainder of this season may not matter as much as effort and growth.  Pending a miracle, this isn't a playoff-bound team.  The performance of the younger players and Hart may be the most important things in our homestretch.

  4. Agreed with others that our current roster may not offer cost-effective trades, and I suspect CF doesn't want to give up on our youngsters.  So, we have cleared roster space for auditions for remaining games.  It isn't exciting, but it could be worse.  Laughton may be a little long for my liking, but I won't argue the bucks.

Fletcher has time to make assessments for the off season.  We see what gives.  Giving Cam York or other a few games is better than paying Gus to warm the bench.  I hope Raffl wins a Cup.  He was a good presence but probably declining and replaceable.

CF has a lot do do between now and October.

  5. We bore witness to what might be the worst loss in this franchise's recent history.  Even the broadcasters couldn't sugar coat it.  Coots and 28 were on the point of our sleepwalk effort.

I do not think AV is the problem.  Years of bad drafting and poor trades have a lot to do with what we are.  We were supposed to have drafted an elite D-corps, right?  Farabee might be as close to a Carter or Leach we've had in ages but others in the stable--not sure.

G and V are not the rainmakers we have needed.  They are above-average, but not Barkovs or Barzals.  G's contract ends next year--that isn't the same for Voracek.

As for goal--we have a question mark that wasn't supposed to be.

    It makes me sad.

The Flyers may not be a Universal Studios in terms of moneymaking, but it is an important asset in their base of operations.  I can't say he is part of the solution or problem.  But the Forbes value on franchises tells me Comcast should be concerned.  We used to be a perennial top 5 and grow.  Now we are seven with declining value:

You and I never saw ads for season ticket sales--they didn't have to advertise. Now the games are chock full (along with gambling stuff).  I've gotten calls for them on the basis of my once-a-year attendance on Black Friday while visiting family.

I hope that ownership sees a deep problem.  We are neck-and-neck with the Leafs for Cup draught. They look a poop load closer, and that really scares me......

  7. Greetings:

I grew up in Vineland, NJ, not too far from Philly.  At the time, the paper was known as the Vineland Times Journal.  Now it's the Daily Journal.  Every blue moon I go online to see what's up.  Today, I saw the following article:

    https://www.thedailyjournal.com/story/sports/pro/2021/04/09/flyers-most-disappointing-team-season/7146530002/

I agree with this assessment.  The last decade has been disturbing and as we've been saying for months, this year's squad is barely watchable.  Fans have a right to be angry and CF/Comcast have a lot of soul searching in coming weeks and months even if we miraculously make the playoffs.

  8. Greetings:

We are mild underdogs entering the game:

The Bruins have won five of their last eight; we've lost eight of our last eleven.  That statistic speaks volumes:

  9. This is a pretty depressing thread on the trade side because it reflects a painful reality--I don't think our draft picks have been nearly as good as we hoped.  Meanwhile, we continue to have the worst SO history in the league, something like 50 and 90.  That can't be a goaltending problem.  I suspect it's a confirmation of what many have said here--the franchise likes its two-way, high hockey IQ players.  Fine.  But you win by putting more goals in the net than your opponent.

Carter Hart won’t be able to work through his issues behind this cast of keystone cops on D and lazy forwards. Hope they go with Elliott or Lyon tonight.

    Samifan:

There is a lot of wisdom in that assessment.

Looking ahead, NJ dumping Zajac and Palmieri for picks and prospects, coupled with an outstanding young goalie duo, tells me we are in a world of hurt within this division...Isles, NJ, Washington, Rangers...

We hope Hart turns it around.  I am probably not watching tonight with other stuff on the plate.  But if I were in CF's shoes, the final third of the season would be audition time for the youngins.  His trades, if any, should follow NJ's--sell off and bring in picks/prospects.  I think we've hit a wall.

We are heavy underdogs at Nassau Coliseum:

You wonder if scouts will be in the stands looking at potential trade targets?  We have lost three in a row to the Isles.  In their current funk, the O and B might make it four.

affl, laughton, tk, ghost, nak, braun, they have to go. heck if someone wants provy and gives us a better player for him, i wouldnt hesitate either.  if dougie is available get him, if they are bigger cheaper forwards and dman in fa, get them too.

I suspect that by October 1, 2021, many of these folks will be gone, though Laughton's departure would be a mixed blessing unless it is viewed as opening a roster slot for someone with possible upside offensively.  I was surprised Raffl stayed and PEB left on last expansion, but I am no GM.

Your size comment is interesting.  In the old days, we were big but slow.  Now we are faster but probably small.  That a plus for Sam the Man.

    Greetings:

Ghost falls under the heading of "Fallen Angel with Possible Redemption."  His contract looked reasonable a few years ago. Now it looks pricey.  No GM can predict with certainty what a guy's health or trajectory will be.  This takes us back to comments of a few days ago.  One is the "Doug Wilson Theory" that contracts over five years are detrimental to a team.  Seattle may take a look.

We were pissed at MacDonald.  In part it was length. In part salary, but mostly the latter.  A few years ago, Ghost at 4.5 looked cheap.  If the dude gets 30 points and QB's the PP (or backup) for two years, I will forgive the trespass of prior management.

Are we "excited" about a $4.5M third pair defenceman for two more years?

It's a great question.  My answer would be he's probably a good PP specialist and quite possibly a second pairing person with the right partner.  But, I acknowledge is shortcomings and if he goes, he goes.  Sadly, the recent waiver suggests he ain't going easily or without salary eat or whatever.

  15. I am wondering about watching tomorrow night. Is it worth it?  What's the value-added? I'd be better off doing some exercise.  Maybe I'll do something during the second period.  They generally give up the first goal, which is a good predictor of outcome for the game in the NHL.

Yeah...CF should take offers.  Low to mid-range draft picks that open up slots and reduce cap space are probably more valuable to the team than much of the current squad.  I echo what others have said--Morin and Ghost may be an interesting third pairing.  But if Ghost goes...at this point, as a long-time fan, it is almost unwatchable, and any roster changes may make a better squad next year, which is what we need to think about.
