Apparently, Yeo made it clear that Washington and Pittsburgh aren't the only signature battles in our division--all divisional games are statement games, particularly at home. That's a wise man speaking.

And that's the worst-case scenario that Fletch will get it into his head that the Flyers are Mike Hoffman or Taylor Hall away from at least being a completive team and will make a catastrophically idiotic move at the trade deadline, which not only won't solve anything, but set the team back in rebuilding process. After all, this is so Flyers-like that it won't shock me even one bit.
As it was mentioned so many times, the Flyers' brass is inherently too arrogant, too stubborn, and too clueless to try what actually proved working for so many other franchises.
Mad Dog hits on an important point addressed in this piece:
https://southphillyreview.com/2021/12/14/2-wins-didnt-solve-problems-for-flyers/
Will Fletcher be able to accept his sunk costs on Risto and move on, if the numbers suggest that's the case? He is a test case. JVR may be one as well.
Best,
Howie

We are a mild favorite (-139) despite facing Mackenzie Blackwood (9-2-0 lifetime against the Flyers). We lost 3-0 in the last matchup.
This is a test case post-AV--we have lost both games to Jersey this season. Will Yeo get a different outcome?
-
BTW, I think we have an interesting test case in Sam Morin. I said it a few weeks ago--this is probably his last shot. Maybe he blossoms elsewhere--but I don't think Fletcher can sign him to another year unless he shows something later this year. Roster space matters.

One thing to consider is the Rangers rebuild as exemplar. A good assessment a few days ago made the following point. They did it in three years. They did not tie it to a core group. They simply made a decision to do it and make it fast. A model that says players a, b, c, and d are the core to build around (Flyers were an example with Coots, G, and Simmonds and assume they have 5-6 years) doesn't work because (injuries, quick performance drops, etc.), the core tends to falter sooner than planned. We may be seeing that with Ellis and JVR. Provorov may not be all that we hoped he be. Bottom line--rebuild with speed or be a team constrained to mediocrity.
Along these lines--the Genie in the Bottle, "just get us into the playoff" model seldom yields a Cup, something we saw in 2010. I also think the speedy approach puts a premium on young players. From that vantage--not sure rolling the dice on 30+ players is a good move. It also means six years for German Rubstov is too long--someone pans out fairly soon or move them out. Sometimes patience isn't a virtue.
Food for thought.

Sadly, our drafting and player development are sub-par. See below:
I don't think management can face the reality of how deep the dog doo is with this squad. Even if they did, the picks would be lousy and their development might be worse.

Neither goalie was that sharp but Jones was less porous. JVR has found some mojo. But Oskar is invisible.

Greetings:
We are favored, but it's fair to ask what's left in the tank after last night's game:
I haven't seen a lineup; I'd assume Martin Jones starts. Arizona is a cellar dweller and averages fewer goals than the O and B. Let's see if the bookies are right.

Wow, going to bed after a win. How good does it get?

Why is it that they are looking to the Max Willmans of the roster to be scoring and emotional leaders!?!?
Good Q. Maybe our overpaid seniors have lost ability, desire, or both.

Team at least looks like it gives a damn...
Agreed. Sorry for 2nd goal from Pacioretti. Should be an good 3rd.

Well, Carter Hart is awake. Hayes made a nice move. The team is skating well. Will it last?
-
It's pathetic but cheering for a loss makes sense given the long-term prospects of these players. What's worse: Thinking about CF's trades, which weaken us even more.

Greetings:
VGK is heavily favored (-220), and 8-2 over the last 10 home games. It looks like Hart versus Lehner between the pipes:
Reflecting on the Flyers makes me think of "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre:" Who Will Survive and What Will Be Left of Them?"

I supect we hit the 12 spot on losses. The team plays dead. We are an old squad. I have near-zero faith in current management. It ain't good.
-
I recall Nittymaki beating Atlanta 17 in a row. Blackwood is channeling Nitty.
This was a team sleepwalk. Maybe the poor play is good. Management has zero out a chunk of players over the next year.
-
If they give up the first goal, they're dead meat. They aren't talented. Even worse: no grit.
-
If you snooze, you lose. Our PP is awful. As Keith Jones notes, our scorers aren't scoring. Fletcher has to see this gang needs replacement.
I could see this streak going 12-15.

I have a tough time staying awake or interested. It's sad.

We have no sustained offense. We turn the puck constantly. We can't enter the zone. There is no forecheck.

I have two holiday parties tomorrow and wonder about being home to watch. But do I really want to watch?

He gets hurt again, of course.
Sadly, that might be the case given his screwy history. But he has to get some time, if only to see what we really have. I suspect his one-year deals with the franchise probably end this season.

For some who want to read the piece by Sielski, here it is:
I agree with much of this. Picking up another D-man off waivers. WTF happens when Sam Morin is back?

Greetings:
The O and B are favored (-1.5) and projected to win 2-2:

We have won 11 of the past 16. It looks like Jake Allan versus Carter Hart in goal. The Habs have COVID issues and goal is a problem. These are two sub-.500 teams duking it out, but the Flyers seem to be on the mend...for a few games.
